Colour Picker gets searchable

In this Storque article, Etsy reveals that you can now filter Colour Picker results by search terms.

The Color Picker, one of our oldest and most iconic features, has received a significant update today.

Now you can filter your color picking by using search terms! First, enter what you’re looking for in the text field on the left, then click a color on the right.

You’ll get some listings that match both the color and the search phrase. To see more results, click the “MORE” button.

You can also click different colors to see all of the results side-by-side!

In addition, we have tweaked the color averaging algorithm to be more precise. This will effect all newly uploaded listing images, so our results should get even better as time goes on.

These enhancements should make the color picker much easier to use. Let us know what you think!

New Forum Categories and Changes to Forum Staff

Etsy has added two new forum categories: Critiques, where you can, “give and receive specific advice about your shop” and Techniques & Materials, where you can, “share and seek advice about creating items.” You can find out more about the changes in this Storque article.

According to the Storque article, some staffing changes are accompanying this new set-up. Daniellexo will oversee the forums as the “forum conductor”, and MaryMary will also now moderate the forums full-time. Robwhite will continue to keep an eye on the forums at night, while Stellaloella has been moved to “large-scale projects”.

Apparently, when the forum categories were updated, a change was also made to the forum link titled “Visit the Storque for Etsy News”, found in the upper right corner of the page, below “View topics you’ve posted in”. It now takes you directly to the News section of the Storque, rather than the Main Storque page. The ‘News’ link in the top grey nav bar, which appears on each Etsy page, still links to the Storque’s front page.

An Editorial from Your Friendly UEN Editors

There’s been some questions and concerns raised both here in the UEN comments and on the Etsy forums recently, about some of UEN’s policies and practices. We’d like to take a minute here to address them.

Top-Level Articles:

A “top-level article” refers to the articles written under the main headlines that appear chronologically in the sidebar. The comments on a top-level article are not part of the article, but a separate entity. In all but the rarest of cases, a top-level article is comprised of a short introduction or explanation, a link to a primary source, and a cut-and-paste quote from the primary source. The information in top-level articles regarding Etsy is factual and opinon-free. We link to sources on Etsy and quote from Etsy. As described in our policies page, we cannot vouch for the integrity of the information linked to; we are only reporting its existence. The information linked to may change, or be retracted, or may be incorrect.

We encourage all UEN readers to investigate the primary sources linked to in the articles and form their own independent opinion on the issue.

As expressed on our policies page, UEN is not responsible for the comments made on any article. Comments are the sole responsibility of the commenter, and we do not vouch for the integrity of the information and personal opinions therein, just as Etsy does not vouch for the integrity of the information and personal opinions posted on its forums. Comments by UEN Editors:

As described in our policies page, we feel it would be a disservice to strip the editorial team of the opportunity to express their individual, personal opinions within the pages of UEN. Consequently, the editors are as equally responsible for their own comments and the information therein as much as any other UEN user. We do not value our opinions any more or any less than others’, and no user should ever feel disinclined to respond to a comment because it came from an editor. At the same time, we are obliged to uphold our no-abuse policies. That means from time to time, you may see an editor speaking separately in a personal manner or in an editorial capacity. It works the same way on Etsy: admins post on the fora in both an official capacity (admin hat on) and using their own personal Etsy accounts (admin hat off). On UEN, we do not have separate accounts for editors, but we feel that there are few enough of us that most readers will be able to identify who is an editor. Our list of editors is viewable on the sidebar if there is any confusion.

Moderating Comments:

A “moderated” comment is a comment that has been held back from publication, but which still exists in our system. We do not delete comments. We may choose to permanently moderate a comment, but it is always still accessible to us, and moderation is reversible.

Every UEN user should be aware that we have automatic spam filters in place. The spam filters are aggressive, and from time to time, real comments may be held up in moderation. Comments most likely to be automatically moderated are those containing links, and those from new users. These comments will be held in moderation until a UEN editor finds and releases them. If you think your comment may have been caught in the spam filter, please contact one of the editors so that they can release it.

Comments that may be manually moderated by an editor include those that are abusive, defamatory, safety concerns, advertisments, or accidental duplicates. Examples of “abuse” including name-calling, deliberate insults and derogatory remarks towards other users, and telling other users to shut up. We may also moderate comments that drag down a discussion and aren’t relevant to the topic at hand, or disputes that escalate into personal attacks between two or more users. If we see conversations heading this way, we will warn the parties involved. Abusive comments will be moderated without warning. We may invite a person to re-post part of a moderated comment if they are willing to subtract the part that violates our posting policies.

Moderation is always a last choice for us. Our intent is to provide a platform for a wide variety of opinions and perspectives. We have had to manually moderate very few comments during UEN’s existence, and we’d like to keep it that way as much as possible. If you see a comment you feel should be examined for moderation, please contact an editor.

Overall, we feel the discussions here on UEN have been thoughtful and civil, even during disagreements, and we thank our users for that.

Anonymity, Impersonation and Usernames:

We are cognizant that some people who wish to discuss negative aspects of Etsy are fearful of reprisal, and for that and other privacy concerns we allow anonymous accounts (called “sockpuppet” accounts on Etsy where they are prohibited). The same rules of conduct apply whether you are using your Etsy name or an anonymous name. Anonymity is not a free pass to abuse anyone, it is simply to protect your business account.

UEN does not tolerate impersonation of another person under any circumstances. Because we allow anonymous accounts, the only possible reason for impersonating someone else is for malicious intent. Comments from impersonators will be moderated and the IP address banned.

For the reasons described above, we also do not permit usernames that contain the names of other individuals within them, with the exception of common-usage words. UEN retains the right to remove inappropriate usernames at its discretion.

We hope that clears up some of the questions we’ve seen floating about. If you have any questions or need further clarification, ask away.

“How they found you” added to check-out process

In this Storque article, admin announces that a line of text has been added to the “submit order” step in the check-out process that prompts the buyer to let the seller know how they found their shop.

Thanks to the community’s help and suggestions in the ideas forum, we have been able to add some helpful text during the checkout process. Upon checking out during the “submit order” step in the process, the following text now appears above the text field:

“Message to the seller (optional): Please share how you found this shop, confirm address details, or anything else you’d like to say!”

Etsy is Johnny-on-the-Spot: Checkout Issue Resolved

Yesterday afternoon (Etsytime), several users reported in this thread that they were unable to complete the checkout process. After inputing/selecting the shipping address and clicking the ‘NEXT’ button, the page would hang or freeze on a blank screen.

RevolvingDork chimed in just minutes later, saying the issue had been fixed.

Etsy cleans house on the Gift Guides

If you’ve perused the Etsy Gift Guides lately, you might’ve noticed some changes. Some new guides have been added and old guides have been cleaned out and refilled. Keep an eye out for forum threads asking for suggestions, like this one for the new “Her” Gift Guide (thread now closed).

Want to know if you’re in the Gift Guides? Go to Google and type in:
USERNAME site:http://www.etsy.com/gift-guides/
replacing “USERNAME” with your own Etsy username, with no spaces. (i.e. if your name is The Craft Store, use thecraftstore in your google search). Keep in mind that it may take Google some time to find and index the new pages.

Search Update: Filter Results by Price Range

In this thread, Revolving Dork said:

Today we’ve added the option to filter your results in items: tags, titles searches by a price range!

Search for items using the search bar at the top of any page, and you’ll see the new Price filter tool on the right side of the screen.

Simply enter a minimum and a maximum price, click on “Show Items”, and you’ll see only listings within your price range.

With this revision we’ve also increased the number of results shown per page to 21, from the original 15 (It always has to be divisible by 3 for the gallery view!). We think this will make it easier to browse through more listings more quickly.

Capping off this update, we’ve also removed the ability to sort items by their views on all pages. This particular feature has been broken for a while now, so we’re going to keep it out of the public eye until we can get a better solution online.

Apparently when the change was first made, it removed the item views column from individual shops, as well as removing it from search results. But that shop item views column has been returned now.

UPDATE by GreenMamba (February 8, 2008)

Observant seller SingingSky found a glitch in the newly added sort-by-price-range feature.

I just noticed when you put a price range in the new search function, and then “sort by” it resets to all listings, and you have to re-enter the price range.

This could be potentially annoying for buyers…

You should be able to define your price range and then sort your heart out!

At least I feel this would be more convenient :)

Within the hour, RevolvingDork reported the issue resolved - another super-fast fix by admin.

“Last Page” button added to listing editing process

In this thread, RevolvingDork explains that there is a “last page” button now added to the listing editing process, which allows you to skip to the last page when you are editing a listing item rather than having to go through each page to finish the edit.

RevolvingDork says:
Today we’ve added a small but useful feature to the listing editing process. At the bottom of every step of editing a listing, you can now find a “last” button.

This button will take you to the last page of the editing process, so you don’t have to click through every step to reactivate your listing.

We hope this helps sellers save some time when they only need to edit a small part of their listings.

Unfortunately we can’t offer a “finish” button on every page, as we need to inform users if they’ve accumulated any additional charges during the editing process.

Private Chat Now Less Private

Etsy’s chat rooms, including “private” (password protected) rooms, now display the username of the person who created the chat and the time they created it. In this thread, Jared explains:

There have been reports of abuse with anonymous individuals creating chat rooms to antagonize others. The Chat was updated to discourage this kind of abuse by displaying the information of who created a chat room and when.
