Etsy Loses the Lock

Today, Etsy said farewell to its familiar golden lock icon. The tiny padlock graphic, indicating that a forum thread had been locked to prevent further comment, has disappeared for good. Admins still have the ability to close threads, but don’t bother to go lookin’ for them.

Story by Community, stellaloella, TechUpdates
Published on November 30, 2007 in Etsy News

Forum regulars will notice a tiny change today: the disappearance of the little golden lock icon. Threads will be referred to as “closed” instead of “locked” to reflect this change. That little 8-pixel icon carried some heavy baggage; we feel the weight lifting already!

Read the Storque article here.

edit by JB:

commenting on that Storque article is also closed.

Admin can read your convos, and may do so without permission

In this thread, Stella says:

stellaloella says:
We respect you privacy.

That said, certain, limited staff do have access to members’ Conversations. Convos are only looked at to help settle disputes and generally staff will ask first as a courtesy.

stellaloella says:

To answer the question posed here: yes, a few people on staff do have access to members’ Conversations. This is used in helping settle disputes. As a courtesy, we’ll ask before accessing a member’s Convos.

This is not something to worry about. We definitely don’t have the time or inclination to randomly read Convos or check up on people’s private discussions for fun.

This time she says “we’ll ask first” rather than “generally, we’ll ask first”.

Updates and info on a multitude of top site issues

In this thread, admin kfarrell gives a general progress/status report on many of the top issues currently concerning Etsy members.

kfarrell says:
So without making any promises or specifying any timelines, I’ll address some of the features mentioned at the beginning of the thread. A couple of them aren’t really my area so I’m afraid I’ll have to skip those.

* Checkout process needs reworking
Yes, we are working on layout changes to make this process easier for new buyers on the site who may not already be familiar with Etsy and Paypal.

* Bring alchemy back
OK!
Seriously, it will be back. And better than ever!

* Deal with categories, tags, and search
Well now that’s three features, isn’t it ;) All three of these are being actively evaluated, tweaked, and redeveloped. They are all very complicated systems that work with each other, so nothin’s gonna happen overnight.

* Clarify the place of both supplies and vintage on the site
Vintage items belong in the Vintage category, handmade and commercially produced supplies belong in the Supplies category.

* More frequent and clearer feedback to the forums from the Etsy admin team (FAQs, stickies, etc)
We have recently release a new help guides section ( http://www.etsy.com/help_guide_main.php ) which we will be adding guides to on a continual basis. We are also going through and updating the FAQs.

* More warning and user testing before introduction of new features
We do collect a lot of user input before a feature is launched, and the lead time between announcing and releasing a new feature varies from project to project.

* Bulk/multi-update for items (Shipping profiles, prices, tags)
This is a great idea, although not something we’re actively developing at this very second because we have a few bigger fish to fry, and only so many cooks can be in the kitchen at a time! Also apparently the engineers like to sleep occasionally. Yeah, I don’t get it either ;)

* Multiple currency support for sellers and buyers
This is something we are working on.

* revise flagging system
We are indeed working on a far more graceful way to handle flags

We’re also working on about 50 other BigSecrets I sadly can’t tell you about, although none of them happens to be a Dodgeball game (bummer for dodgeball fans).

We do read *all* the feedback on Etsy posted here in the forums, including the stuff that’s sometimes hard to read. So please, continue posting your ideas (both positive AND negative), I just ask that you keep things constructive and refrain from personal attacks on admins or each other. There is a human being behind every avatar on Etsy.

Forums, Convos, and Gift Guides temporary downtime

In this thread, kfarrell says:

We have heard scattered reports of connection problems with the forums and convos. In order to investigate the problem, we will be taking the forums, convos, and gift guides down temporarily. We will keep the downtime as brief as possible. Check the Storque for updates on the situation. Thank you for your patience!

Tweak to the DOs and DONTs

Reported in the Storque. This article, quoted in its entirety, can be found here.

Story by Community, CustomerCare, SarahSays
Published on November 27, 2007 in Etsy News

In order to clarify Etsy’s policy concerning the use of language and images on the site, Etsy has updated the wording of the  DOs & DON’Ts slightly. (Please note that these are not policy changes; these are the same policies that were implemented at the time the DOs & DON’Ts were launched Spring 2007.)

People on Etsy come from many different walks of life; we’re an international, multi-cultural marketplace. These policies are about keeping this community healthy – and growing. Reaching a diverse audience is essential to the success of our marketplace.

New under Member Accounts:

  • Don’t use profane or racist language in your username and/or public profile.

New under Selling

  • Don’t use profane or racist language or images in the public areas of your Etsy Shop, such as: username, public profile, item title, first image of a listing, tag, avatar, banner, announcement, and/or shop section.

The rules for listing Mature Content items have not changed.

Please brush up on these policies and make sure your shop is up to date.

An older version of the Etsy D&Ds, dated November 22, 2007 15:49:22 GMT, can be found here.

Minor changes to Etsy Gift Guides

I just noticed the categories for the gift guides have changed, this must have happened today. Here is the old version of the gift guides, cached Nov 26.

anyway, “Eco Friends” has changed to “Environmentally Friendly

“Co-workers” and “boss” have been merged into “Office Mates

Baby girls and Baby boys has been merged to “Babies

“Pets” has been changed to “Pets and Pet Lovers

“Pen Pal” has been changed to “Book Worms and Writers

and, sadly, the “Bunny Lovers” category has been removed completely. Is there anyone who doesn’t love The Bunny? Seriously. What evil Bunny haters could be responsible for this?

Alas poor Bunny, I knew her, Horatio.

Renewed item didn’t get 4 months

SupernovaDesigns came across an issue while trying to renew an item that has been sitting in edit mode that is past its expiration date. She explains in this thread:

Example: (a real life example!)
I have an item I put it in edit on, say, 10/28. It expired on 11/11. I reactivate it on 11/27. The item had not been removed from my shop, and was in active listings. I “renew” the item, and the new expiration date is 3/11 (4 months from the original expiration date), instead of 3/27 (4 months from when I renewed it).

Here is RevolvingDork’s solution to the problem:

If you have a listing that is past its expiration date, but you haven’t allowed it to expire naturally, it will be given 4 months from its last known expiration date. If you want to prevent this, you should let your listings expire naturally before renewing them.

IMO, this is a bug. A seller should not have to worry about whether their listings expire “naturally”. The listing should be given 4 months from when it was renewed. Feel free to discuss in this thread.

 UPDATE by GreenMamba.

RevolvingDork says:
If something is in edit mode and is past its expiration date, it will be moved to your expired listings within 24 hours after you activate it.

There are not currently any plans to alter the way the site works in this area. (emphasis added by GM)

Changes to Etsy’s Privacy Policy

The Storque reported today that Etsy has made some changes to their privacy policy.
Bolding added by editor.

Your privacy is very important to us at Etsy! When you submit personal information to Etsy, Etsy complies with our Privacy Policy concerning how we collect, store and distribute this information.

In an effort to make the Privacy Policy easier to understand and user friendly, we have made some changes to the Policy. Please note the content of the Policy has not materially changed!

Etsy is a secure site. We are a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Program and we comply with the EU Safe Harbor Framework set forth by the Department of Commerce. Pursuant to our Privacy Policy, it is our duty to notify the community of changes — even minor ones like these — to the Privacy Policy.

Now, that Storque article is closed to comments and questions, so no one can ask exactly what the changes were. I have gotten a cached version of the previous Privacy Policy, from November 19, 2007.
I have compared the old version and the new version, and the changes are as follows.
Bolding added on changed text.
