There are some duplicates on today’s showcase. Looks like it is a result of the Showcase mess up talked about here. Here is Jared’s explanation for it:
jared says:
The multiple items look like they’re all coming from the same two sellers. The good news is that it is consistent (you’ll see these duplicate images with each refresh, just their positions are randomized).
It appears that the day was probably sold incorrectly. We’ll investigate further and work with the affected sellers directly.

Recently there have been many images issues. RevolvingDork has come up with a few troubleshooting tips:
RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,
There are a few threads about difficulty uploading images, so here’s a guide to troubleshooting this issue.
1. Do *not* upload untouched files pulled directly from your digital camera. First re-save them using image editing software, such as Photoshop or Paint.
Reason: Many cameras save their images in non-standard jpeg formats that don’t work with Internet applications. If you save them for the web using image editing software, they’ll be put in standard jpeg format.
2. Ensure that your image filesize is 500kb or less. If it is larger than 500kb, resize the image or save it using a lower quality setting. Remember, 1mb = 1024kb. If your image filesize is being measured in mb, it’s too big!
Reason: As a security and bandwidth precaution, our image forms are written to throttle uploaded files to 2mb. There is also a timeout built into the servers themselves that will stop taking upload data if it takes over a certain number of minutes to be sent. Since bandwidth upstream speeds vary, we recommended that broadband users keep their images under 500kb and dialup users keep their images under 250kb.
3. Check your firewall settings. Many users are behind firewalls without even knowing it. You may have a firewall built into your operating system, or as a piece of software running on your computer, or built into your router or modem. Since changing the settings for firewalls varies wildly from one setup to the next, you’ll have to consult the firewall provider’s documentation for instructions.
Reason: Firewalls are sometimes set to throttle upstream traffic by default. This is basically the equivalent of your system blocking your own traffic to the internet.
Hope that helps!

Lauren has announced that you should send an email to community@etsy.com if you think a particular thread has violated forum guidelines. That is the quickest way to get hold of them.
Before, I was sending convos to admins. I am glad Lauren clarified!
See the thread here.

Etsy is investigating a bug caused by Google Analytics that has resulted in some users seeing security warnings while adding new items.

Screenshot by Shoozles
In this thread, RD says:
We’ve had a few scattered reports of folks getting security warning messages. It is indeed linked to Google Analytics, the internal stats program we’ve been trying out for the past few weeks.
It is not an actual security breach, as all of the business files related to the program are stored locally on our servers.
We’re looking into the overzealous warning issue and investigating possible fizes. We’ll update you when we figure it out!
edit by JB:
More information about google analytics. Doing an internet search for “google analytics security certificate warning” turned up many other recent reports of the same problem on other websites that use google analytics. Etsy is not the only site affected.
Update by JB, August 29, 2007
Users are still getting the security popups.
RevolvingDork says:
We’ve made a few changes we hope will help prevent these from happening — we’re now monitoring the situation to see if it helps.

Not very, according to this thread by an Etsy community member.
Stella, an Etsy admin, had this to say:
stellaloella says:
You know what, I agree. Well, to a point anyway — I’d say the current system in inefficient, but not totally ineffectual or useless. In fact, the Forums are lacking a lot of tools that would be super helpful for members and staff.
A lot of requests have been made for sticky threads or an announcement forum or an indicator for “official” threads. And those are all good ideas, actually.
(And here come the part that you all love and hate to hear…)
We’re working on it. I can’t say when it will change, or what exactly will change. But we know this is a problem, it’s frustrating for us at time also, and we’re working to solve it.
Posted at 10:45 am, August 23 2007 EST
The reason the UEN was started by serena was because of this very lack of “sticky threads or an announcement forum or an indicator for “official” threads.” We look forward to the day when information communication at Etsy is so good that there’s no need for the UEN.
Update by JB
Rob has commented on the issue!
Rokali says:
Yep, we all want it. We’ll have a solution soon, in the form of a dedicated section of the site for news.
Posted at 12:11 am, August 24 2007 EST
No description whether the dedicated section of the site will be a new forum, or on another area completely. It’s also unknown how soon is “soon”.

| After many threads in Bugs complained of missing views, or item views that have reset and stuck on 1, Revolving Dork had this to say here: |
Hi all,
Today we’re been upgrading some of our servers, which in this case has involved restarting them. The view counts you see on the live site are stored in the RAM of the servers themselves, and when a machine is restarted the RAM is cleared and the counts you see are wiped back to older values. All of the view data for your listings is still saved in a hard file, but they are not currently visible on the public website.
We’re currently trying to overhaul the view system to make it more robust and prevent this sort of thing from happening, but it may take a few months to be implemented. In the meantime, your view counts may not be accurate.
We know that many of you rely on your view counts, and we’re trying to get a working system in place to store them as quickly as possible.
|
Update (sort of) Edit by GreenMamba
Revolving Dork locked the original thread and started another, with the identical title, containing the exact OP, with the addition of this enlightening tidbit of info:
You may also have items that have stopped counting views altogether.
Why the lock on the original thread? Perhaps the comments from seller Cidtalk, at the bottom of this page, had something to do with it.

Etsytools has “outed” their identity
they are http://interrobang.etsy.com and http://vertis.etsy.com
EtsyTools says:
[This is not an admin post. Etsytools.com is not affiliated with Etsy, Inc. or Etsy.com]
Hey guys, thanks for bringing this up. We’ve been having issues with the site today, and I’m so grateful people let us know, because I was at work and had no idea.
Regarding our other accounts:
I am the female half of Etsytools, I’m also Interrobang. My partner in crime is Vertis. Up until this point we weren’t openly discussing our other stores, and that was probably a mistake, but I made that decision out of fear. The idea of being under a microscope by all these people scared the living daylights out of me, and it still does really.
Anyway, thanks for your support, we’re going to be working to get things fixed tonight!

A seller’s location in Geo3 now reflects only the info displayed in the seller’s public profile. If anyone finds this is not true generally, please comment below or on the new post about this issue. Yay!
jared says:
Thanks everyone for your great feedback. :)
The ‘location’ field of the Geo3 should be showing what you type in the ‘City’ field of your Public Profile. Sorry about the Scotland error, although wouldn’t it be nice if we are all there, sharing Etsy stories in some pub by the sea?

Regarding use of the Etsy name, logo and other trademarks by etsy members, there has been some confusion about:
1. which specific items on the etsy site are protected by trademark?
2. Are etsy street teams who have already made promotional material or websites with the etsy name going to have to change all their material?
3. Are new street teams being asked not to use the name etsy in their team names?
4. What should members do while they are waiting for etsy to develop their formal permission process for use of the etsy trademark?
SarahSays has tried to answer some of these questions: (bolding added by editor)
I hope this helps to clarify:
Scenario 1)
Knittie makes a knitted bag that says “I love Etsy” on it. She applies to use Etsy’s logo, she is granted the right to use the logo FOR FREE.
Scenario 2)
Sarah makes a website www.SarahlovesEtsy.com. Her website features her Etsy likes and her dislikes. Sometimes Sarah criticizes Etsy. She applies to use Etsy’s logo. She is granted the right to use the logo FOR FREE!
Scenario 3)
Meanie makes a website that has the word “Etsy” in the domain and features adult material. Meanie applies to use the Etsy logo. He is not granted the right to use it. He is asked to take it down.
Scenario 4)
Uncrafty uses a company to drop ship tshirts that says: “Etsy is nice.” This use does not comply with Etsy’s policies. Uncrafty is asked to stop her use of the Etsy logo.
Scenario 5)
Streetie is on a street team called “Streetie’s Etsy Street team.” Streetie applies to use Etsy’s name. Etsy grants Streetie the right to use the name, FOR FREE.
Scenario 6)
Cardie has a business card that has her Etsy url in it and says: “buy Cardie’s art at Etsy.com.” Cardie does not have to apply for this use. This is fair use. Cardie is using the Etsy trademark to describe where she buys and sells all things handmade.
Why are we having a trademark program? To protect Etsy’s brand. It’s just that simple. That’s it. Just like Nike or Coca-Cola, Etsy is a trademark and as such, Etsy must police its brand or it will lose the right to do so in the future. So if a bad company makes a product and labels it an “Etsy” product and sells the environmentally harmful product and children are harmed, Etsy will be able to get this company to stop. If Etsy allows anyone to use the mark without permission, when the bad company comes around, Etsy will not be able to stop this use.
There have been uses of the Etsy mark that Etsy has not liked, and Etsy has asked for this to stop. Etsy has been policing its mark.
Hold tight. We love your creative uses that comply with Etsy’s policies. If you’re currently using the Etsy logo, keep doing what you’re doing. You do not have official permission YET, but as soon as the program comes out, apply (business as usual until we announce it). Most likely so long as your use complies with Etsy’s policies, Etsy will grant you permission to use the trademarks for FREE.
We will be very fair about the program.
I hope this helps,
Sarah

SarahSays says: (bolding added by editor)
Lollibomb: thanks!
Laurenrose: use your Etsy mini! No need to apply.
And in Scenario 3) when I said “adult material” I mean porn.
The program will apply to the name “Etsy” or the Etsy logo of the reddish orange rectangle with the white Etsy.
What I want everyone to understand is that in general, Etsy loves your uses. We have to do this to protect our brand.
This last bolded statement appeared to contradict a previous statement.
“The name Etsy, and other Etsy graphics, logos, designs, page headers, button icons, scripts, and service names are registered trademarks, trademarks or trade dress of Etsy, Inc. in the U.S. and/or other countries.”
SaraSays clarifies:
SarahSays says:
eclipse: Sorry, the program applies to all of Etsys marks not just the Etsy name or the Etsy reddish logo. I was answering a specific question and it seemed as if I was making a blanket statement and for that I apologize.
This does apply to “The name Etsy, and other Etsy graphics, logos, designs, page headers, button icons, scripts, and service names are registered trademarks, trademarks or trade dress of Etsy, Inc. in the U.S. and/or other countries.”
and yet more clarification.
Etsy has some federally registered trademarks in the U.S. (and in various other countries). Some trademarks are pending federal registration. And other intellectual property, although not federally registered, or registered in a state, is part of the Etsy brand. And as such, this intellectual property is protected.
The statement is overly broad to protect all of these uses. I want to protect current trademarks and future trademarks. Again, the most important thing to remember is that Etsy loves uses that comply with our policies. We love it. LOVE IT! The best way to protect the brand is to have the program. You will apply and Etsy will grant certain uses for FREE. Etsy is just trying to protect our brand.
If you want to use a mark located on Etsy, any mark, fill out the form. If you’re not sure if the mark is protected, ask. So long as your use complies with Etsy’s policies, it’s very likely we’ll grant you permission to use it…FOR FREE.
I hope this helps to clarify.

See August 20 update below - seller location in Geo3 now reflects info displayed in seller’s public profile.
Our previous coverage and comments are here:
http://etsynews.com/338/ability-to-search-by-place-on-geolocator-3-disabled/
http://etsynews.com/332/help-test-geolocator3-part-2/
Re-cap & update:
-Admin solicited additional feedback on the Geo3 function
- People realized they could display the exact city location for any seller
- The location displayed did not necessarily match the seller’s own entry for “location.” Exact seller location retrievable even where the seller left location in his/her public profile blank.
- The locations appeared to be derived from current or past billing addresses provided to Etsy. To open an Etsy store, a seller is REQUIRED to submit billing info including billing address
Etsy TOS include a blurb saying they will restrict uses of confidential info submitted to Etsy
- On August 15, Jared acknowledged users’ privacy concerns and said “[t]he ability to search by place has been disabled and will not be re-enabled until a good solution is found.” Yay - privacy acknowledged!
- People still posted they could see other sellers’ city locations still. Boo - private info still showing.
- On August 17, any seller’s location was all showing as a city in Scotland. Yay - private info not showing any longer!
-UPDATE On August 19, each seller’s exact city is showing again. Appears to be derived from billing info. But City only appears to be showing without State. Boo - private info showing again.
As far as I’m aware the only time addresses are harvested on Etsy is for shipping and when an user wants to set up a store and only then it’s billing address/card info that’s submitted. Addresses are not required to have a regular Etsy account - which only required a valid email account and an Etsy password + user name.
UPDATE August 20: a seller’s location in Geo3 now reflects info displayed in the seller’s public profile. If anyone finds this is not true generally, please comment below or on the new post about this issue. Yay!
