Treasury Crash (resolved)

…and maybe other flash apps too…

Jared says it’ll be up shortly.

EDIT by starrydesigns

Treasury has been fixed! Here is Jared’s addtional comment:

jared says:
My apologies to everyone who created a list in between the crash and the hiccup. Many of these were not saved by the server.

Images Not Loading (resolved)

Here:

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

We’re aware of the image uploading issues — we’re working on it now.

We’ll post when it’s all fixed…

EDIT:

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

We had an issue with our image servers this afternoon that prevented images from being uploaded and processed properly.

We’ve got it fixed up now, so listing may resume. :]

If you listed or relisted images during the problem, you’ll have to re-upload them. You can do this for free by editing the listing.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience — the number of images on Etsy is growing by leaps and bounds every day, and it can be hard to keep pace!

Update to image uploading bug

For several weeks, many etsy sellers have been unable to upload photos to listings or convos. These users had always been able to upload in the past, and then it suddenly stopped working. Today Etsy announced the cause of the bug was a change they had made. They have made new changes that will hopefully fix the problem.

RevolvingDork says:

Changes made in Image Uploading process
Hi all,

After much digging and research, we found that the issues people were having with uploading images were linked to the dimensions of the images themselves. The larger the dimensions, the bigger the memory footprint — if the image was over a certain size, the system would run out of memory and hang.

We’ve done two things to make this easier to use:

1. We’ve increased the memory allocation for the image uploading process.

2. We’ve imposed a hard limit on image dimensions. If your image is over 3328 x 3328 pixels, you will get an error message that it is too large.

A special thanks to those who contributed useful information as we investigated this issue!

As before, be sure to follow these guidelines when uploading your images: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5211589

That previous thread he linked to gave these tips for uploading:

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

There are a few threads about difficulty uploading images, so here’s a guide to troubleshooting this issue.

**A BIG NOTE FOR EVERYONE: If your images do not meet these specifications they will most likely NOT work. Even if you successfully did things differently in the past, that is no guarantee that it will work now. We’ve always suggested that you adhere to these guidelines for your images.**

1. Do *not* upload untouched files pulled directly from your digital camera. First re-save them using image editing software, such as Photoshop or Paint.

Reason: Many cameras save their images in non-standard jpeg formats that don’t work with Internet applications. If you save them for the web using image editing software, they’ll be put in standard jpeg format.

2. Ensure that your image filesize is 500kb or less. If it is larger than 500kb, resize the image or save it using a lower quality setting. Remember, 1mb = 1024kb. If your image filesize is being measured in mb, it’s too big!

Reason: As a security and bandwidth precaution, our image forms are written to throttle uploaded files to 2mb. There is also a timeout built into the servers themselves that will stop taking upload data if it takes over a certain number of minutes to be sent. Since bandwidth upstream speeds vary, we recommended that broadband users keep their images under 500kb and dialup users keep their images under 250kb.

3. Check your firewall settings. Many users are behind firewalls without even knowing it. You may have a firewall built into your operating system, or as a piece of software running on your computer, or built into your router or modem. Since changing the settings for firewalls varies wildly from one setup to the next, you’ll have to consult the firewall provider’s documentation for instructions.

Reason: Firewalls are sometimes set to throttle upstream traffic by default. This is basically the equivalent of your system blocking your own traffic to the internet.

Hope that helps!

However even after following all of those tips, many users still could not upload.
This locked thread is full of users who tried all the tips and still could not upload.

IF you try all of the above tips, and you still cannot upload images, some etsy users have had success with the following tips:
1. Try making the file size of the image under 100 kb

2. try making the width of the image between 500-1000 pixels. (do not use less than 430 pixels width because the image will be scaled to 430 pixels in the listing view, and resizing a picture larger makes it pixellated.)

3. If you are scanning artwork, scan at 72 dpi. That is what the internet resolution is anyway and scanning at a higher resolution will not increase picture quality on the web. (higher resolutions are for printing)

4. You should use RGB, which stands for Red/Green/Blue. CMYK is only for print (and stands for Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black).

5. make sure your image is a jpeg, NOT a gif or png. Revolving Dork also says to only use jpegs, but some users who emailed support were getting replies saying that gif and png were allowed. I think that information is outdated. Etsy will convert gifs to jpegs, but with major degradation of quality. (image will be grainy and blurry) It’s better to convert it to jpeg yourself and it won’t lose much quality.

Confusion regarding “free with purchase” listings

There has been much confusion in the forums regarding “free with purchase” listings. Some people have thought it was okay to list such items, some have thought it was a no-no. Admin has stepped in to give an official word on this issue.

stellaloella says
:
Our rules state: “Don’t create listings which are solely advertisements or promotions (no item for sale).”

(From the DOs & DON’Ts > Selling > What can be sold on Etsy > No
http://www.etsy.com/dosdonts.php#a4 ).

Listings of this type are not allowed. If you wish to include a free gift with purchase, you may. However, you cannot create a separate listing to promote the free gift. This not only pads your sales and feedback stats, but also has the potential to cause problems if the “free gift” listing is purchased separately (as evidenced by this thread).

Please contact support [!at] etsy.com for further assistance in this situation.

More Billing “News” From Admin

I know some of my co-editors will have more to say on this. For now, here’s the latest quote (page 27, highly accessible):

RevolvingDork says:
No matter what, we will be closing the bills at the end of the month so they will be payable.

Autocharge will likely not be around for a while longer — probably a month or two after the new billing system has been released.

Some additional comments from RD on the same thread…

Etsy Admin says:
Every “sigh” pushes the system back another day. ;P

AliciaMae says:
RD Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post the information you stated a couple pages ago about manual payment being available for September in a new thread. And stop locking threads that point it out!!

Very few people will be able to read through this whole monstrous thread to see that we’ll be able to pay the combined bill in a week or two. SO many are worried about that and it would be negligent to not say something where it’s more easily seen!

Etsy Admin says:
AliciaMae, when there is new information, I will make a new thread — nothing has changed since the first post of this thread.

YarnGirlStuff says:
So again I’ll ask, since on page 27 RD says “Autocharge will likely not be around for a while longer — probably a month or two after the new billing system has been released.” shouldn’t you remove the part on my ‘Your Etsy Bill” that says I’ll be autocharged next month?

Etsy Admin says:
YarnGirlStuff, that will all change with the new billing system, so yes, it will be removed.

The Storque launching soon

From the etsy blog

Dear Etsians,

We are edging near — very near — to launching the Storque. The engineers are testing the biscuits out of it and making sure it’s user-friendly.

Alison and I (and Shannon too, who is helping us with video production) are excited to share the pieces we’ve produced and the pieces we’ve asked community members to produce. We’re hoping the launch will inspire many more of you to pitch fresh ideas to The Storque so that we can share the handmade life with the world!

To that end, we’ll have a link where you can pitch your ideas to us. We’ll also be setting up a weekly online Workshop, to informally take suggestions, chat about the direction of The Storque, and hear your reactions.

We are soooo excited!
–The Storque team

Update Sept 4, by JB
stellaloella says:

Atlas is not part of the public site. Atlas is a behind the scenes, Admin-only tool.

The Storque (which will finally be launched very soon) will have a dedicated section just for news about Etsy. This includes all technical updates, new feature info and all other Admin announcements. Users will be able to subscribe to an RSS feed for *just* the News section, if desired. There is great categorization and content filtering ability on The Storque, which will make it easy for users to get all the important site-specific news info all in one place.

Geolocator 3, part 5: New map feature in profiles

Where in the world are you?
Now you can tell everyone and be searchable by location, with the location YOU specify, not your etsy billing address.

jared says:

set your location on the planet
We just updated the Public Profile page ( http://www.etsy.com/public_profile.php ) to allow you to set your location on a map! We tried guessing where everyone is by your country and city, but for many, this has put you in the right city, but the wrong state (for example, Brooklyn, IL vs. Brooklyn, NY).

Help us get your shop in the right place. Go to your public profile now to set your position.

Thanks!

ps, this will help your shop appear in our newly launched Geolocator ( http://www.etsy.com/geolocator.php )!
Posted at 6:58 pm, August 28 2007 EST

Update:
A detailed announcement from the etsy blog

It is our pleasure to introduce to the Etsy community the latest Geolocator.

We’ve also updated your Public Profile page with an interactive Google Map. Use this map to position your shop in the world. This way you can guarantee exactly where you would like to appear in Geolocator search results. If you’re a seller, you should update this data as soon as possible.

New Features!

We’ve been working really hard to bring you the best features in the
shortest amount of time possible, however if there a new feature you’d
like to see, please let us know!

Some of the new features in Geolocator 3 include:

Place Search
Now besides being able to search by tags, materials or seller names,
you can finally search by place! The way it works is by pulling your
location information from your Public profile.
Be sure you log in into your Etsy account and update that information.
Select your country in the drop down and do a quick search for your
City by typing it in and pressing the lookup button. The location data
you provide here is the data we’ll be using within Geolocator.

Result Clustering
The number of Etsy Sellers has grown exponentially during the last
year so we needed to somehow simplify results when plotting them on a
map. Through Clustering we are now able to group users according to
their location and current zoom level, creating this way an
*approximation* of where the users are.

Deep linking, Browser History
You can now deep link directly into any specific search. Simply grab
the URL (web address) currently being displayed in your browser and
voila. The back button is also now enabled within the flash application.

Paging Through Results

Of course you can probably imagine the incredibly large number of
results we get for any search. To be able to cope with this, you can
now page through results the exact same way you’d do in most
websites, by using paging. The difference here is that these results
get plotted on the globe.

Maximized View
To fully appreciate this new application in all its full screen
glory, be sure to check the [ maximize view ] link on the top right
of the application.

The Geolocator 3 was built by Marcos Weskamp for Etsy. Marcos is truly a world class developer and a wonderful human being. It is a joy for us to be working with him. Curious about what he is working on next?

Etsy Blogs About Toy Safety

This is an excerpt from the brief Etsy Garden entry:

Toys for the little people should be safe. In light of the recent scandals about toy recalls from major corporations, we have safety on the mind, and we want to encourage toy-makers to test out their items and design them with sucking, pulling, tender babies in mind. Remember, kids will eat anything!  (emphasis in original blog entry)

It’s nice to know that Etsy has the safety of little ones in mind, but what the article fails to mention is that Etsy sellers have also recently been the subject of a baby item recall - namely, Swarovski-encrusted pacifiers. See here. It isn’t just the major corporations who need policing. There is at least one seller named in the recall who has failed to post any sort of recall notice in her Etsy shop - even though the law specifically requires it. And, more and more toxic crystal-decorated infant/baby/child items continue to be listed on Etsy.

The UEN covered the original recall issue here.

UPDATE August 30, 2007 by GreenMamba

There was an ongoing thread started by an Etsy seller who was concerned about the use of toxic Swarovski crystals in children’s products. The thread became a vehicle for information about the federal recall of Swarovski-encrusted pacifiers - sold by three Etsy sellers and two non-Etsy sellers. The thread was also used to request that Etsy require the seller(s) named in the recall to post the notices prominently in their Etsy shops,  a CPSC requirement. Instead, stellaloella locked the thread with these words:

This is a very serious issue indeed.

As a venue, Etsy is not qualified to determine the safety of products or impose federal laws or regulations pro-actively on sellers. We can and will uphold the law when we are notified by the appropriate agency, but it is not our place to independently make those determinations. In addition, each individual seller must be responsible for their own business practices, including product safety, as outlined in our Terms of Use.

This thread is being locked for calling out, as it has gotten much too detailed about specific sellers/shops on Etsy.

Etsy is working on the errors

In case some people cannot get to the forums at all:

RevolvingDork says:

Hi all,

We’re aware of the 99 errors that have been occuring for the last few minutes — we’re looking into them now and hope to fully rectify them shortly.

This is the error people are getting:

Cannot assign requested address (99)

You are on webserver
Time August 28, 2007, 12:31 am

This should be a momentary issue — please try refreshing this page in a few minutes!

I get this error trying to reply to convos, get it when I click the “buy” tab, get it when I come to the forums, it’s replacing the showcase banner on the front page, etc. Other people get it listing and checking out.

edit:
Now Etsy is down completely
1:00 AM EDT

The connection was reset
