The topic of Etsy subsidizing street team advertising has come up in several street team chats (see here and here):
happywhosits asks, will etsy assist street teams with marketing? …
matt: yes … [Etsy] will help with press etc when you are putting on events … we will even help subsidize advertising costs
Etsy admin Matt elaborated further in an email:
There is no official policy per se. we evaluate each request for help on a case by case basis. That said, it is a rare occasion when we are not willing or able to help. This help comes in the way of money, graphic design work, media pitches, advice, and on site promotion.
We have subsidized a number of advertisements for Etsy sellers, but we always judge the benefits and the costs of an ad before committing to a dollar amount.

Here’s a quick update on some of the bigger bugs we’ve been fighting…
- The cookie/login issue
We’ve found a bug in how we generate random data that could possibly result in login “collisions”. It’s our theory that user A would login and get his random data token. Sometime thereafter user B would generate the exact same random data thus grabbing user A’s session. We’ve got a short term fix in the works that will highly decrease the chances of that happening. It’s our goal to have that fix pushed out early Wednesday AM EST. In addition we’re working on a larger long term fix to better handle cookies in general.
- 500 errors on the bill pages
Users with a large amount of unbilled charges or a large amount of charges under a single bill would generate “500 errors” when loading pages. We’ve got a fix in the works to paginate out these pages which should resolve the issue.
- Images not loading/hanging
This one is a horrible ghost in the machine. The crazy randomness of this issue along with an inability to recreate on demand is making this one incredibly difficult to track down. We’ve got people looking over every single part of our system to try and find where this gremlin lives. I don’t have any updates for you as of yet, but it’s something we’re all working on.
[Editor-added bolding]
These are updates on issues we covered previously:
Users reporting seeing other people’s account info which continued from our original coverage.
Image-loading issues.

There have been more instances of this problem, seemingly beyond Admin’s earlier explanation, with no input from Admin as of yet on these new instances, captured with screenshots. Please see UEN’s earlier post for the situation, plus the new updates.
EDIT: Admin’s many locks and responses are reposted in comments below.
EDIT (by starrydesigns): Read about the latest incident here.

Rokali says:
It has been our external policy that usernames can’t be changed, because doing so breaks our database and makes it a bit too easy for people to run from bad behavior.
It has been our internal policy to allow usernames to be changed in the event of legal proceedings for trademark infringement. Documentation must be provided, and we have to go into the database by hand and saw several tables in half to make it work. (It’s not pretty.)
We have not published this internal policy because we are worried about it being abused.
Recently, a popular seller on Etsy was served due notice for Copyright infringement by a large corporation. In concert with our above policies, we changed her username. This is by no means the first time we have done this, but it was the most visible.
Do you think we should update the DOs & DON’Ts with our internal policy? How do we guard against people people taking advantage of it?
Rokali says:
OK I updated the DOs and DON’Ts:

Thanks for your feedback!

Etsy just dedicated a database to the forums. What does that mean to you? High traffic on the forums won’t affect the speed of the rest of the site, whether you’re a seller or a shopper.

We got a tip from a reliable source that Etsy will be implementing a currency converter, as well as a system in which the money is all handled through Etsy. In other words, buyers pay Etsy, and Etsy pays sellers.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this… but now we have multiple sources, it’s worth passing on.
These are some major changes! No timeline that we know of. We’ll keep you updated.

The reward for referring an engineer who is hired at Etsy has now risen from $250 to $1000.
Time to lasso yourself an engineer! :)
