Views Still Not Up-To-Date

When asking whether views were up-to-date, I was directed to this thread, although there’s been no admin update since June 19 (almost a week). So, I guess they’re not up-to-date.

Puerto Rico is USPS Domestic - Except On Etsy

Puerto Rico is part of the US mail system and they have USPS zip codes (I think they all start with “0″). Mail sent to/from Puerto Rico is handled by USPS & is domestic, just as it would be to a California or Utah address. I believe it’s considered Zone 8 by USPS for rate purposes for packages sent from any other location - and all the rates, including flat rate envelope and box, apply to PR addresses. The private carriers such as DHL, UP and FedEx charge more for shipping to PR addresses but they also charge more for shipping to Alaska and Hawaii addresses.

According to Chris, on Etsy, a buyer registered in Puerto Rico with a Puerto Rico address can’t purchase a listing unless the listing separately lists Puerto Rico or Everywhere Else in the shipping profile even if the seller says they ship to US. [EDIT: or the buyer in PR can enter their address as being in the US. WONKY].

Just something to know - you all may be missing out on some sales involving no more effort than to ship an item to another state. I just bought some rings from a seller registered in Puerto Rico - and just received them via USPS Priority in one of their Priority boxes. Easy peasy.

Here’s a handy map showing the USPS system:

Search and Category Issues Fixed!

Good news:

RevolvingDork says:
As estimated on Friday, we successfully cleared up all search and category issues over the weekend. This is thanks to the diligent work of Mike and Haim, who have been working on the issue for quite some time now.

Now, listings will appear in their categories within 5 minutes of being listed. All active listings are appearing in their categories and in search where appropriate, regardless of when they were listed.

We thank you all for your patience as we fought through this complicated issues, and we’re doing our best to monitor the situation and ensure that it all stays “good”.

If you encounter any further issues with the categories or search, please post them here and I’ll look into them for you.

A Slightly Improved Update on Category/Search Problems

From thread version six:

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

Last thursday we caught up with all of the older listings that were not appearing in searches and the categories. After that, however, newly created listings were only appearing several hours after they were listed.

This is due to the system receiving far more listing updates than it can handle in a short period of time. We’re working on optimizing this system so the delay between listing and appearing in searches is shortened. As we stated at the beginning of the week, we hope to have it all straightened out by the end of this week. We’re just about ready to push out our improved extra-careful replication software and run the final catch-up script — when that’s done, everything will be where it’s supposed to be. If the final tests come out well, the catch-up script will run throughout the weekend and we’ll be set.

Flash Problems

Hey all,

The multi-user flash aps are having some problems currently — me, jared, and haim are looking into them now.

Will post again when they’re back to normal…

EDIT:

jared says:
Ok, Chat and the Treasury should be back in good form now. Please report if you have any problems. Thank you.

But people are still having problems.

EDIT:

jared says:
We’re getting closer. Thanks for your continued patience.

EDIT:

Update in new thread:

Jared says:
As many of you know, the Treasury had some pretty serious issues today.

It stared with the much anticipated ‘indefinite expiration’ bug fix. This bug is now fixed. Lists will now actually ‘expire’. No longer will you see the number of lists change each time you move from one page to the next.

However…
…this change prompted me to reboot the server without a proper shutdown. It was a mistake and corrupted some essential files. Jared promises to not do this again.

This corruption kept people from connecting for quite a bit. At one time the Treasury came up and 222 lists were almost immediately created (you guys are getting good). These unfortunately were lost when I was forced to repair the application directory to remove the corruption.

Now, with Haim, Chris, Mike, Drew and Sid’s help, things seem to be running smooth. Yes I just knocked on some wood.

I appreciate your patience and will work hard to keep the Treasury stable over the weekend and beyond. The lists that are in there now should remain intact. I apologize to everyone who lost a list this afternoon.

jared says:
Chat should also be fixed.

jared says:
I’m sorry, the lists that were created this afternoon were lost.

There should now be a few hundred more spots open for the taking.

Etsy “May Consider Investigating” Optimizing Site for Google

Wonder why a google search often comes up with an Etsy RSS feed instead of a store? Etsy doesn’t.

RevolvingDork says:
We develop out HTML purposefully without semantic markup, as it keeps it much easier to maintain and build pages more quickly. We haven’t spent much time worrying about how google spiders our pages, but it’s something we may consider investigating in the future.

Might be useful.

Cleaning Up The Messy Fora, And A Hint of Something Better to Come…

We do have guidelines for what goes where, and we do our best to manage the forums appropriately. For better or worse, the community has pretty much outgrown the current Forums. We’re working on a new solution — not just the band-aid of adding more sections, but a whole new Community area of the site. We’re also hiring more people to help out, with more focused responsibilities.

What Is and Isn’t Permitted Re: Posting About Etsy’s Competition

Recently some threads discussing sites other than Etsy (Mintd, Facebook) have been locked. To address the confusion about what does and doesn’t qualify for locking, Emily was kind enough to post the following:

emilybidwell says:
Hi there - to clarify any concern about discussing other websites (esp. our competition) in the forums:

The only thing we are going to lock is a thread that appears to be directly advertising or promoting another website.

Feel free to discuss your greater experience of selling outside of Etsy.

If you have any questions about something you’d like to post, but seems like a gray area, feel free to contact me at abuse [!at] etsy.com.
