Commercial Supplies and Vintage Can Still Be On Front Page, For Now

From this thread (full disclosure: started by me) that arose from a question on another thread about commercial supplies being on the front page:

emckinstry says:
But I thought the whole point of creating opt-in searches for commercial supplies and vintage was to make Etsy *by default* a site for all things handmade.

Stella replied:

stellaloella says:
We don’t yet have the opt-in searching feature or separation of the Commercial Supplies and Vintage items from the handmade items.

It may change after we implement that separation, but for now, all items in the marketplace have a fair shot at front page fame.

Also, Stella would not give a time frame for implementation of the opt-in feature.

I don’t really understand how it is that the Great Compromise of the Constitution (separate, but allow, commercial supplies and vintage on Etsy) has become a back-burner item.

Having Problems With The Treasury?

In a thread about Treasury bugs, Jared/Etsy Admin/Programmer replies:

jared says:
“unable to connect please try again later” means you are behind a firewall. Talk to your system administrator to allow communication across port 9100. Perhaps you are trying to connect at school or work?

“takes forever to load (several minutes, not just one or two)” a very slow Treasury is the result a slow or poor connection between your computer and our servers. This can happen anywhere along the path. If you’re on wireless, try switching to ethernet. If you’re on dial-up, consider upgrading to high-speed.

Despite several rewrites and optimizations, the Treasury requires considerably high technical specifications. Not all computers are cut out for the job. Thank you.

What Does “Price Manipulation” Mean?

There was a comment here in the UEN blog that resulted in PaganoDesignWorks asking for clarification in a thread on the Etsy fora regarding the following clause in the Etsy Terms of Use:

Manipulation: Neither buyer nor seller, may manipulate the price of any item for any reason.

After checking with Etsy’s lawyer, Stella (Etsy Admin) explained:

I verified with Sarah what this clause encompasses, and she agrees that some specifics would be beneficial. We’ll look at expanding that part of the TOU, but for now, I have some insight for you.

Essentially, “manipulation” means anything that would cause the final sale price to not be an accurate representation of the sale. It’s mostly, (but not completely) related to fee-avoidance.

Here are some (but not all) examples of what this applies to:

– stating one price in the listing, but then sending a revised invoice for a *higher* price post-Etsy-transaction, thereby falsely representing the price AND avoiding part of the 3.5% sales fee. (Sending a revised invoice for a *discount* post-Etsy is fine, since we don’t yet have a built-in feature for that.)

– changing the price of items intended for trade (bartering; using an item as currency) to less than their actual monetary value, thereby avoiding the 3.5% sales fee

– hacking into someone’s account to change their prices (this one is not a fee-avoidance issue, but still applies)

A seller *always* has the right to price their items as they deem appropriate. But what we don’t want to see is people changing the price last-minute before or immediately after a transaction as it impacts the value of the fees we collect on the sale (which all sellers agree to pay when they list items).

When the TOU are revised, we’ll let you know.

(Thanks to Carrie/YarnGirlStuff for the heads-up).

No Fee Compensation For Downtime

From this thread, suggesting that fees be suspended/refunded while Etsy is experiencing serious technical problems:

Rokali
Etsy Admin says:
Suspending all fees has the catch-22 effect of quadrupling the number of items people list, which will slow everything down even more.

In the 4 month lifetime of a listing, all in all there’s perhaps a total of 3 days wherein things were unusable. This represents 2.5% of the tital listing time. Considering that it’s 20 cents for those 4 months, the downtime is equal to one half of one pennt, or $0.005.

Also keep in mind that the listing fees are what allow us to buy the additional hardware we need.

Click “Help” for Important Site Info

In the absence of a site map (which would be really handy), admin says to go Help for important info:

stellaloella says:
There’s a link on every page of Etsy to the home of the DOs & DON’Ts - it’s the ‘Help’ tab in the gray site header. Then just click on the DOs & DON’Ts link in the left-hand sidebar. The ‘Help’ section hold all the important info like the rules and the FAQs.

The New Terms Of Use Have Been Posted

Per this thread:

stellaloella says:
The updated Terms of Use have been posted.

Thanks.

The changes are pretty substantial. Buyer, seller, or just a lurker - you should read them carefully.

(Thanks to starrydesigns and eclipse for the tip!)

Three Days For Payment Is The New Standard - But Not Completely Documented

In this thread, an exchange regarding payment terms

dingo says:
Do’s and Don’ts say 3 days to pay or the seller can cancel.

The “Report a Transaction” page says 10 days to pay before the seller can request a refund of the fees.

Terms of Use says the buyer is “obligated” to “complete” the transaction within 7 days.

Three different pages, three different rules. I don’t see why anyone could possibly be confused about this.

Chillionaire
Etsy Admin says:
The 3 day rule is in effect now as part of the new DOs and DON’Ts. We know the transaction report still says 10, the customer service department is currently nagging the programmers to fix this for us.

Let’s hope the documentation gets consistent soon.

EDIT: The report transaction form has been updated, but oddly, says “I sold and item and the buyer has not paid within 3 or 4 days.” 3 or 4? What happened to 3?

EDIT: And the TOU clearly state 3 days:

A buyer is obligated to complete the transaction of a purchase of an item on Etsy in any shop within three (3) days. A buyer is obligated to immediately pay in full if using PayPal by clicking the “Buy Now” button during checkout. A buyer must submit payment in full within three (3) days if paying by personal check, money order or “other.” A buyer who pays by mail with a money order or personal check must send the seller an email or Convo to notify the seller that that the payment is in the mail, within three (3) days of the transaction.

An Update On The Technical Site Issues From RD

In this thread, entitled The past 2 days: what went wrong, and what’s being worked on:

RevolvingDork says:

Hi all,

On Saturday night, Haim, Mike, and I headed to the datacenter to perform some heavy maintenance on the servers. We planned to install a new, larger switch, several new image servers, and a reorganization of the network architecture. This required system downtime.

Despite a well-documented plan (with charts and everything!), the work took much longer than anticipated. It ended up seeping overnight into Sunday afternoon, as almost everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. We eventually got the site online, but there were still problems.

[Edited for brevity: RD wrote quite a long explanation - please see the original thread for the full post]

We recognize these issues as a failure on our part, and we’re deeply sorry for the disruption to the tens of thousands of people who tried to access the site during these times. Those with showcase dates during the effected days (Sunday and Monday) will be issued a make-up day next month.

Needless to say, we will be doing our best to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. We’re working now on getting fully operational and facilitating future growth. Keeping the site up and functioning quickly is our #1 priority, and we’re working day and night toward this goal.

If you are having any issues that are not described in the list above, please let us know here, and we’ll look into them as soon as possible.

Again, we are deeply sorry for the weekend’s problems, and we appreciate truly appreciate your patience.

April 21 and 22 Showcase Will Automatically Be Re-Run - Dates Depend on Which Showcase

If you had a Showcase date on April 21 and/or 22, good news - you will automatically get a make-up date, without having to do anything. From this thread:

matt says:
Hello,

We are truly sorry for the site maintenance/outage over the weekend and will be re-running the April 21st and 22nd Main Showcase on May 1st and 2nd. Those who had Mother’s Day spots on those days, will be rerun in the main showcase on May 3rd and 4th.

Does that make sense? There is no need to convo me about it as the entire days will be rerun. That said, you are welcome to convo me if you just wanna chat.

Thanks and best wishes, matt

jared says:
The Chat Rooms and Workshops should once again be working. Thank you all for your patience and happy to have helped you get stuff done during the down time. ;)
