Captain nemo’s comment reminded me to introduce another new feature here at UEN, albeit one we’ve had for a week or so now.
Here are the steps to getting an avatar (i.e. a small image by every comment you make) here at UEN:
- Sign up at Gravatar.com.
- Use the same email you signed up a Gravatar with for each of your comments here.
That’s it! Easy, huh? Post here and show me the results.
Edit: Fixed a configuration option that was blocking gravatars that weren’t rated, so (per my tests) all is working now. One piece of advice, though:
Make sure that after you upload your image at Gravatar.com, you actually click on it and select it as your default grav. You would think that the first image you upload would automatically become the default, but nope.

I hadn’t bothered to post anything along the “policies” line, because I never imagined this humble site would get so much attention. Just yesterday we were joking about “what if Rob posted here,” and UEN is hardly a week old anyway.
But, since we are getting an incredible amount of traffic, spurring on debates (confused? Just scroll down), and receiving plenty of admin attention, it’s probably time to come clean about what policies and goals UEN has. I want to be transparent about what you can expect from us.
Since this site is currently hosted by me, founded by me, and located at my purplepapaya.net domain, I’ll take the liberty of laying the ground rules for now, but I’m very open to hearing input from the editorial team and readers. Please feel free to post comments.
Journalism: News vs. Editorials
Our primary goal is to be a helpful, quick, and pithy news source for Etsy’s sellers and buyers. With each post, we aim to provide the relevant information and as full a context as can reasonably be hoped for in a short post. Through providing a news source, we hope to support Etsy and its growing community of buyers and sellers; thus, we are inherently a pro-Etsy site.
It’s important that our writers be trusted to post the important news regardless of how we feel about it, which is why having a diverse and thoughtful team is so vital.
Though we want to stick to the facts, it would be a disservice to strip the talented team of editors (the majority of whom are very successful sellers) of the opportunity to give their thoughts on the issues. So, we strive to keep each post roughly 80% news and 20% editorial (the beloved 80/20 rule), and we leave the bulk of our opinions for the comments.
Comment Moderation
We sincerely do not want to heavily moderate comments, ban users, or limit discussion, though we can all think of some extreme situations where that would be necessary (e.g. safety concerns). For now, we’d like to ask that posts be thoughtful and constructively intended. This is a public site that is indexed on the major search engines and visited by thousands of Etsy members daily.
UEN does not take responsibility for what’s posted in the comments. Each comment on this site is the opinion of its owner, and just because it appears on our site does not mean that UEN endorses the contents. On the other hand, if Etsy takes action against the writer of a particular comment (see reference here), UEN will not be able to offer any protection.
______
I’ll stop with the policies here for now, but as more questions arise I’ll add more. Please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Our latest editor is KateBlack, who hails from the wonderful land of New York and makes some really bad buttons. Welcome, Kate! Thanks for volunteering your time and thoughts.
I also added this new feature which enables you to view the posts an editor has made. Just click on their name underneath the title of a post. For example, here’s Kate’s list.

I’ve added a few new goodies to help you get your Etsy news faster and easier.
Sidebars:
Upon request, I reorganized the sidebars of this blog. There’s a new list of our latest posts, so scan there if you don’t have time to read the full articles.
Watching discussions:
Subscribe to comments has arrived! Now you can get emails of the latest comments in a discussion sent straight to your inbox. Just check the “subscribe to comments” box as you leave a comment, and everything will be set up.
I imagine people using this to keep track of discussions that are personally important. It’s easy to unsubscribe too.
Don’t miss a thing:
This isn’t new, but here’s a reminder. We have comments and posts RSS feeds, and each post publishes an RSS feed of its comments.
Bloglines is a great starter tool for reading RSS feeds.
Pretty Stuff
Now you can visit our category cloud and see what topics we’re addressing most frequently.
Let us know via comments anything else you’d like to see! I’m happy to take suggestions.

Welcome, thanks for stopping by! This blog will attempt to gather news useful to Etsy.com’s buyers and sellers in one organized, discussion-friendly place.
Please feel free to navigate using the categories and archives you’ll see in the sidebars. As more news is posted, those lists will flesh out.
This site is not affiliated with Etsy except that its authors are sellers and buyers there. We will always provide a source link for each news article, and please rely on the original sources for your business decisions. Comments are very loosely moderated, and the authors and editors of UEN do not make any guarantees about accuracy of statements made in the comments by visitors and guests.
One last thought: If/when an Etsy-sanctioned news and announcements vehicle becomes available, this site may no longer be needed. However, there’d still probably be plenty of room for an unofficial site, since there are a lot of news items that are important to sellers, but that the team doesn’t see fit to publicize. But, if Etsy’s admins did come up with something so perfect that we’re unneeded, then I guess that’s a good thing. At that point, we may continue in a limited capacity, change directions, or be no more! We’ll see, but until then, many thanks for reading.
