Etsy Edits ‘Sold’ Listings on “Rare Occasions”

Hints of behind-the-scenes edits of ’sold’ listings have surfaced recently in the Etsy fora. Today, Etsy member quirke asked pointedly (twice) for confirmation or denial that this was practiced/condoned by Etsycorp. The first thread was closed quickly, without explanation, by Etsy’s on-staff lawyer, SaraSays. The second, however, was answered truthfully, and at some length, by admin and co-founder Matt.

matt says:

Howdy,

I want to start off by apologizing for closing an earlier thread on this subject. Since we do not publicly discuss individual private matters, we thought that was the best course of action at the moment. That said, in doing so we did not address the questions you were asking, and I would hate for a bit of misinformation to create a great deal of speculation (yes, I know that closing a thread does not help matters). So, If I may, I would like to speak to your concerns here.

As a general policy we do and will not alter any sold listing records. I completely agree that this is inappropriate and of questionable ethics.

So, have we ever? Yes.

In extremely rare occasions and in our best efforts to responsibly comply with the DMCA (http://www.etsy.com/copyright_policy.php), we have had to remove text or images from a sold listing .

We have never removed the entire listing itself or altered the statistics or data of an individual shop or of Etsy as a whole.

While, obviously, I can not discuss these specific cases, I am happy to try to answer any other questions you may have on the subject and certainly invite you to email me at matt [!at] etsy.com . I also encourage you to check out our policies here for further clarification: http://www.etsy.com/copyright_policy.php

Thanks, Matt

UPDATE by GreenMamba 6-13-08:

After two shut-downs, a third thread has been started by quirke, asking general questions about the practice and ramifications of editing ’sold’ listings.

And a fourth . . .

And a fifth, by another Etsy member . . .

New feature: rearrange photos

Etsy has released a new feature that allows you to arrange a listing’s photos after uploading the images. Before, you had to delete the photos and reupload them to change the order. Now each photo has little right and left arrows underneath it, which lets you move them around in any order.

Change in Listing Time for Renewals

In this Storque article Etsy admin bethela announces a change in listing times for all items renewed, from today (April 21, 2008) onward.

Excerpt:

Currently, when you renew an item, 4 months are added to the end of your existing listing.

Example:  An item listed on February 9, 2008 will expire on June 9, 2008. If you renew today, April 18, 2008, your listing would expire October 9, 2008. Renew again, another four months are added and the item will expire February 9, 2009, and so on.

As part of our ongoing initiative to upgrade the site’s ease of use and improve everyone’s experience, we want to avoid this problem and have made the following change: if you renew an item, four months will be added to the item listing from the date of renewal.

Example:  An item listed on February 9, 2008 will expire on June 9, 2008. If you renew today, April 18, 2008, the listing will expire on August 18, 2008.

Current listings with expiration dates beyond four months from today will not be affected. This will only impact listings renewed from today forward. You can read more about this and other upcoming changes in Rob’s summary of our recent Town Hall meeting.

Batch shipping has arrived

In this Storque article and this thread, Etsy announces that batch shipping changes are now possible.

Based on the community’s feedback and suggestions, sellers now have the ability to update the shipping on multiple items at once! The new batch shipping feature works very similarly to the sections feature in which you can assign sections to a list of your items all at once. Keep in mind, you will need to have preset shipping profiles in order to batch assign them to your items. Find step by step instructions right here on how to create a shipping profile from our Shipping FAQ’s.

Here’s how it works:

Click the new “Batch Shipping” text link under the “Items” heading in Your Etsy when you are logged into your account.
You will see a list of all your currently listed items on Etsy with a box next to each one (this is where you will assign a shipping profile).
Select your preset shipping profile from the drop down menu next to all all of the items you wish to edit.
Click the “save changes” button at the top right of the screen and you are all set!

Special note: Once you save changes to your batch shipping edit, the box to the side of the item will go back to reading “no change.” Each time you go back to edit your batch shipping profiles, the boxes will retain their previous assignment; however, they will simply read “no change” if you choose not to change the shipping profile each time.

Apostrophes’ Time Has Come!

Tech Update: Apostrophes Allowed in Item Titles

Thanks to several community suggestions, we’ve updated the listing process to now allow apostrophes in item titles!

Brush up on your grammar skills and learn everything you ever wanted to know about the apostrophe on wikipedia. Now you can officially do the happy dance about grammatically correct item titles! It’s a perfect time to list a new item to test it out or simply edit some of your current titles to reflect the change!

“Last Page” button added to listing editing process

In this thread, RevolvingDork explains that there is a “last page” button now added to the listing editing process, which allows you to skip to the last page when you are editing a listing item rather than having to go through each page to finish the edit.

RevolvingDork says:
Today we’ve added a small but useful feature to the listing editing process. At the bottom of every step of editing a listing, you can now find a “last” button.

This button will take you to the last page of the editing process, so you don’t have to click through every step to reactivate your listing.

We hope this helps sellers save some time when they only need to edit a small part of their listings.

Unfortunately we can’t offer a “finish” button on every page, as we need to inform users if they’ve accumulated any additional charges during the editing process.

Let us know if this makes things easier for you!

Expired/Inactive Listing Bug Resolved?

After inquiring about the status of the Expired Listing Bug, a known design flaw which allowed Etsy, under specific circumstances involving expired or inactive-expired listings, to accept a renewal or relisting fee without delivering the contracted 4 month listing period, the thread was closed by RD with this comment:

RevolvingDork says:

Closing this to prevent further misinformation — there is no known issue with expired listings. If you have a specific example of something that looks wrong, let us know and we’ll try to reproduce it.

In another thread, also closed,  kfarrell had this to say:

kfarrell says:

This issue affected a handful of users, and to our knowledge it has been resolved.

If you have a listing that you believe is showing the incorrect expiration date, please send an email to support (at) etsy.com with details about when you listed/relisted the item. They will be happy to help you, and will let engineering know any pertinent information.

Thanks!

Obviously, admins were NOT on the same page with this information. Please note that RD’s comment is in direct opposition to at least three other comments (one made by himself).

In this thread:

RevolvingDork says:

If you have a listing that is past its expiration date, but you haven’t allowed it to expire naturally, it will be given 4 months from its last known expiration date. If you want to prevent this, you should let your listings expire naturally before renewing them.

In this thread:

SarahSays says:

I wish I had an answer for you. All I can say is that there are some valid concerns in this thread. I spoke with some Etsy engineers on this issue.

No official word on when this bug was actually fixed - two threads on the Etsy fora within the last week and a half, complaining about the bug, suggest the fix must have happened very recently, perhaps within the last day or so.

Some experimentation by Etsy sellers (prior to any acknowledgement from admin of a resolution) seems to indicate that the bug may, indeed, be ‘resolved’ – though the process itself still has some buggy aspects. See here.

Renewed item didn’t get 4 months

Renew/Relist Bug - Update

Renew/Relist Bug - Update

Etsy admins and engineers have known, for at least a month, that there is a bug, or programming oversight, which allows Etsy to take a .20 listing fee without delivering the 4 months of contracted listing time.

This bug affects those listings which are in inactive or edit mode and are beyond their expected expiration date. Unlike active listings, these items are bypassed by the ‘expiry bot’ and when reactivated and renewed/relisted, it causes the listing time to be calculated from the original expiration date, not the current relisting date - which in turn actually subtracts listing time, rather than adding it. In some cases, the entire 4 month listing time has vanished, requiring an additional .20 renewal/relisting.

There have been several threads (here, here, and here) detailing this bug, each of which has been closed to further comment and discussion. The latest thread to get the invisible lock was shut down with this comment by admin stellaloella:

stellaloella says:

Please contact support [!at] etsy.com if you’ve had this specific issue.

As Chris (RevolvingDork) mentioned earlier in this thread, this occurs if you renew any item before it’s been processed by the expiration script. Currently that doesn’t happen for items in Edit Mode (inactive).

Once you re-activate a listing, you’ll need to let it expire “naturally” (usually within 24 hours if it’s past its listing term). Then you can renew it from your Expired Listings page without any loss of fees or time.

The Engineers are aware of this concern; it’s on their list of thing to improve.

Updates and info on a multitude of top site issues

In this thread, admin kfarrell gives a general progress/status report on many of the top issues currently concerning Etsy members.

kfarrell says:
So without making any promises or specifying any timelines, I’ll address some of the features mentioned at the beginning of the thread. A couple of them aren’t really my area so I’m afraid I’ll have to skip those.

* Checkout process needs reworking
Yes, we are working on layout changes to make this process easier for new buyers on the site who may not already be familiar with Etsy and Paypal.

* Bring alchemy back
OK!
Seriously, it will be back. And better than ever!

* Deal with categories, tags, and search
Well now that’s three features, isn’t it ;) All three of these are being actively evaluated, tweaked, and redeveloped. They are all very complicated systems that work with each other, so nothin’s gonna happen overnight.

* Clarify the place of both supplies and vintage on the site
Vintage items belong in the Vintage category, handmade and commercially produced supplies belong in the Supplies category.

* More frequent and clearer feedback to the forums from the Etsy admin team (FAQs, stickies, etc)
We have recently release a new help guides section ( http://www.etsy.com/help_guide_main.php ) which we will be adding guides to on a continual basis. We are also going through and updating the FAQs.

* More warning and user testing before introduction of new features
We do collect a lot of user input before a feature is launched, and the lead time between announcing and releasing a new feature varies from project to project.

* Bulk/multi-update for items (Shipping profiles, prices, tags)
This is a great idea, although not something we’re actively developing at this very second because we have a few bigger fish to fry, and only so many cooks can be in the kitchen at a time! Also apparently the engineers like to sleep occasionally. Yeah, I don’t get it either ;)

* Multiple currency support for sellers and buyers
This is something we are working on.

* revise flagging system
We are indeed working on a far more graceful way to handle flags

We’re also working on about 50 other BigSecrets I sadly can’t tell you about, although none of them happens to be a Dodgeball game (bummer for dodgeball fans).

We do read *all* the feedback on Etsy posted here in the forums, including the stuff that’s sometimes hard to read. So please, continue posting your ideas (both positive AND negative), I just ask that you keep things constructive and refrain from personal attacks on admins or each other. There is a human being behind every avatar on Etsy.

Tweak to the DOs and DONTs

Reported in the Storque. This article, quoted in its entirety, can be found here.

Story by Community, CustomerCare, SarahSays
Published on November 27, 2007 in Etsy News

In order to clarify Etsy’s policy concerning the use of language and images on the site, Etsy has updated the wording of the  DOs & DON’Ts slightly. (Please note that these are not policy changes; these are the same policies that were implemented at the time the DOs & DON’Ts were launched Spring 2007.)

People on Etsy come from many different walks of life; we’re an international, multi-cultural marketplace. These policies are about keeping this community healthy – and growing. Reaching a diverse audience is essential to the success of our marketplace.

New under Member Accounts:

  • Don’t use profane or racist language in your username and/or public profile.

New under Selling

  • Don’t use profane or racist language or images in the public areas of your Etsy Shop, such as: username, public profile, item title, first image of a listing, tag, avatar, banner, announcement, and/or shop section.

The rules for listing Mature Content items have not changed.

Please brush up on these policies and make sure your shop is up to date.
