Etsy has released a new feature that allows you to arrange a listing’s photos after uploading the images. Before, you had to delete the photos and reupload them to change the order. Now each photo has little right and left arrows underneath it, which lets you move them around in any order.

Etsy is working on a solution to the problems that Mac Safari users are having trying to upload images.
In this forum thread, Revolving Dork says:
Last week we implemented a change on the photo uploading pages that prevented users from clicking the “upload” button more than once. This was done because pressing the button multiple times sends the same data multiple times, slowing down the file transfer and eating up server resources.
There is a bug in some versions of Safari that prevents uploads from going through after the upload button is clicked. In the past, sellers got around this bug by hammering the “upload” button until it worked. Now, this is no longer an option.
We have developed a workaround for Safari’s bug, and it appears to have resolved the issue, at least in our tests. If you’re still having issues, it may be best to use an alternate free browser for file uploads on Etsy. You should have no issues using Opera ( www.opera.com ) or Firefox ( www.getfirefox.com ).
Let us know if you are still having issues with image uploads — If you are, please post the following info:
1. The version number of Mac OS you’re using
2. The generation/type of Mac you’re using ( G3 , G4, Intel Core 2 Duo )
3. The version number of Safari you’re using
Thank you for your help!
If you are using Safari and still having trouble uploading images, please post in this forum thread and give your input.

In this thread, Etsy admin kfarrell invites everyone to get a sneak peek of Etsy’s new “Bannerator” - a banner-generating tool.
kfarrell says:
Hey guys,
Anda and Matt are furiously preparing the Etsy Teams and resources section for some updates, but I wanted to leak a new tool Anda and I put together: The Bannerator! http://team.etsy.com/bannerdisplay.php
The banner generator lets you easily make a 760×100 banner for your Etsy shop. Just enter your shop name / tagline, select a design, and click “Make me a banner!”
You can then save the banner to your computer and head on over to Your Etsy to upload it to your shop.
Enjoy!
Check out the Bannerator here.

Reported in the Storque. This article, quoted in its entirety, can be found here.
In order to clarify Etsy’s policy concerning the use of language and images on the site, Etsy has updated the wording of the DOs & DON’Ts slightly. (Please note that these are not policy changes; these are the same policies that were implemented at the time the DOs & DON’Ts were launched Spring 2007.)
People on Etsy come from many different walks of life; we’re an international, multi-cultural marketplace. These policies are about keeping this community healthy – and growing. Reaching a diverse audience is essential to the success of our marketplace.
New under Member Accounts:
- Don’t use profane or racist language in your username and/or public profile.
New under Selling:
- Don’t use profane or racist language or images in the public areas of your Etsy Shop, such as: username, public profile, item title, first image of a listing, tag, avatar, banner, announcement, and/or shop section.
The rules for listing Mature Content items have not changed.
Please brush up on these policies and make sure your shop is up to date.

Many users are experiencing Red X syndrome on Etsy, images are not loading. Etsy needs your help to troubleshoot the problem. Please post in this topic on Etsy if you are having this problem:

Hi all,
There have been a few scattered reports of people having issues loading pages and / or images. Internally, everything seems to be running smoothly, and none of our engineers have been able to reproduce the issues that some of reported.
This points to some kind of routing issue — some section of the architecture between Etsy and your computer that isn’t working properly.
You can help us track this down by supplying us with some information:
1. What issue exactly are you seeing? Does it persist after refreshing the page? Does it persist after restarting your computer?
2. Where are you located?
3. (Advanced users) Can you paste a tracert from your machine to www.etsy.com ?
If we find anything, we’ll make an announcement and will take care of it. Thanks!

Ever wonder how to get your listings to show up in the knockouts on the front page?

In this thread, Jared gives some tips for getting your items picked up by the knockout bot:
I should mention that you will have better odds having your items discovered as knockouts if you leave some white space between the item and the edge of the image.
For example, ff you look at this listing:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7594822
See how the mirror goes right up to the edge of the image border? One of the first things the knockout bot does is scan the entire border edge of an image to make sure that every pixel is pure white. The way your mirrors are edited, they fail this test. Try reducing the size of the mirror just a bit, creating about a 10px white padding.

This is an update from the previous thread that was started early September.
RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,
There are a few threads about difficulty uploading images, so here’s a guide to troubleshooting this issue.
**A BIG NOTE FOR EVERYONE: If your images do not meet these specifications they will most likely NOT work. Even if you successfully did things differently in the past, that is no guarantee that it will work now. We’ve always suggested that you adhere to these guidelines for your images.**
1. Do *not* upload untouched files pulled directly from your digital camera. First re-save them using image editing software, such as Photoshop or Paint.
Reason: Many cameras save their images in non-standard jpeg formats that don’t work with Internet applications. If you save them for the web using image editing software, they’ll be put in standard jpeg format.
2. Ensure that your image filesize is 500kb or less. If it is larger than 500kb, resize the image or save it using a lower quality setting. Remember, 1mb = 1024kb. If your image filesize is being measured in mb, it’s too big!
Reason: As a security and bandwidth precaution, our image forms are written to throttle uploaded files to 2mb. There is also a timeout built into the servers themselves that will stop taking upload data if it takes over a certain number of minutes to be sent. Since bandwidth upstream speeds vary, we recommended that broadband users keep their images under 500kb and dialup users keep their images under 250kb.
3. Make sure you’re saving your image in RGB format, and not CMYK.
Reason: Simply put, CMYK files will not work on the web.
4. Check your firewall settings. Many users are behind firewalls without even knowing it. You may have a firewall built into your operating system, or as a piece of software running on your computer, or built into your router or modem. Since changing the settings for firewalls varies wildly from one setup to the next, you’ll have to consult the firewall provider’s documentation for instructions.
Reason: Firewalls are sometimes set to throttle upstream traffic by default. This is basically the equivalent of your system blocking your own traffic to the internet.
Hope that helps!

Hi all,
We’re aware of the image uploading issues — we’re working on it now.
We’ll post when it’s all fixed…

EDIT:
RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,
We had an issue with our image servers this afternoon that prevented images from being uploaded and processed properly.
We’ve got it fixed up now, so listing may resume. :]
If you listed or relisted images during the problem, you’ll have to re-upload them. You can do this for free by editing the listing.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience — the number of images on Etsy is growing by leaps and bounds every day, and it can be hard to keep pace!
