New ‘Community’ Link Replaces ‘Forums’ in Etsy Menu Bar

It will now take you two clicks to reach the Etsy fora. Etsy has removed the ‘Forums’ link in the main menu bar at the top of each page. Instead, a new link reads ‘Community’  (circled in red below) and takes you to a new page of links and info where ‘Forums’ is the first in a series of six clickable graphics including ‘Virtual Labs’, ‘Chat’, ‘Team’, ‘The Storque’, and ‘Resources’.

Note that the menu bar reference to The Storque has changed as well - now the link says simply ‘News’.

Community Link

Also on this new page is a left menu bar filled with a variety of links to info of use or interest to the Etsy community, and a rotating Storque feed below the main graphic links (not pictured).

UPDATE by GreenMamba

The Etsy main navigation bar is undergoing a series of changes. The latest is the removal of the ‘Gift Guides’ link. Here is what stellaloella had to say about it:

stellaloella says:

Gift Guides have been moved to a sidebar link on the homepage. You can also find them linked under the Buy tab.

We’re moving the furniture around to make room for a brand new sofa. A really big awesome new sofa that’s been on back order. And we’re really excited about this sofa. You will be too. I’m sure of it. ;)

Front page featured items that sold in 24 hours

Etsy admin Jared has created some interesting (and pretty!) visualizations of front page featured items that sold during two weeks in September. This one shows the sold items separated by category:

Front Page Featured Listings that Sold Within 24 Hours sorted by Category

Jared uploaded this image to Flickr, where he gives more details:

Art is number one seller on the front page of Etsy, followed closely by Jewelry. Accessories and Paper Goods are nearly even, with the fifth most popular category being Bath & Beauty.

The most multiple quantity purchases are in the Toys category. Supplies is found at no. 8. Supplies is currently the number one selling category on Etsy but is ranked low in this graph probably because Supplies are seldom featured on the front page.

Jared has also made a graph of front page featured items that sold in 24 hours sorted by price.

Watermarks on the Front Page

Do you have watermarks on your pictures? If you want to be on the front page, think twice about the watermark or place it in a less prominent area of the picture.

To learn how to place watermark in a less prominent area, read about what HeyMichelle has to say in the 2nd paragraph of her forum post.

HeyMichelle says:

Hi there guys…

Just to clear up the watermark issue: there is no rule against watermarks on the front page. However, we do like to keep the front page looking clean, so items with watermarks that show on the front page do not usually make it to the front page.

So, what to do if you want to use a watermark? Upload a photo that is longer than the allotted size, and put the watermark at the top of the photo. The photo will be cropped in treasury and gallery thumbnails. Give it a test run by switching the view in your shop to “gallery view” (click “gallery”, which is right above “price” near the top of your shop). Voila! Now the watermark is still there, but hidden.

Oh, yes, and welcome to Etsy, NaturalHistorie! Oh, and about your question…if you do decide to use watermarks, you will want to make them as non-distracting as possible. If your main concern is people printing your work out, I have heard (don’t quote me on this- very “word on the streets”) that if you make the resolution 72dpi, then it will still look good on the computer but be useless in a printout. Maybe try experimenting with this?

Under the Selling FAQ,

Are watermarks acceptable on my Photos?
We’re not very fond of them but you’re welcome to use them.

Thank you, Ren, for the tip!

Commercial Supplies and Vintage Can Still Be On Front Page, For Now

From this thread (full disclosure: started by me) that arose from a question on another thread about commercial supplies being on the front page:

emckinstry says:
But I thought the whole point of creating opt-in searches for commercial supplies and vintage was to make Etsy *by default* a site for all things handmade.

Stella replied:

stellaloella says:
We don’t yet have the opt-in searching feature or separation of the Commercial Supplies and Vintage items from the handmade items.

It may change after we implement that separation, but for now, all items in the marketplace have a fair shot at front page fame.

Also, Stella would not give a time frame for implementation of the opt-in feature.

I don’t really understand how it is that the Great Compromise of the Constitution (separate, but allow, commercial supplies and vintage on Etsy) has become a back-burner item.

April 21 and 22 Showcase Will Automatically Be Re-Run - Dates Depend on Which Showcase

If you had a Showcase date on April 21 and/or 22, good news - you will automatically get a make-up date, without having to do anything. From this thread:

matt says:
Hello,

We are truly sorry for the site maintenance/outage over the weekend and will be re-running the April 21st and 22nd Main Showcase on May 1st and 2nd. Those who had Mother’s Day spots on those days, will be rerun in the main showcase on May 3rd and 4th.

Does that make sense? There is no need to convo me about it as the entire days will be rerun. That said, you are welcome to convo me if you just wanna chat.

Thanks and best wishes, matt

Showcase on Sale Fri April 13, Noon EDT

Read the blog post here.

UPDATE: Chris explains “Showcase Magic“:

RevolvingDork says:
The super-slowness ( worse than regular slowness ) is being caused by the showcase registration rush, which started at noon EST.

It should be out of our systems in a few minutes — it’s almost sold out.

Next Showcase Spot Sale Date - Friday, April 13

Information comes from this thread.

For more information on how the Showcase (a form of paid advertising on Etsy) works, please see this Etsy blog post. Also, please note, the rules may change, so please keep an eye on the Etsy blog for specifics about the April 13th sale.

Something to consider when purchasing Showcase dates is this undocumented bug. Please read the entire thread to understand the implications for purchasing spots on certain dates.

Programming Change for Treasury Lists On The Front Page

jared says:

Ok I’ve modified the administration tool for the Treasury so that it does not allow:
* a curator’s own item
* duplicate items
to be promoted to the front page (although duplicates and your own items can (for now) appear in your list).

So it’s ok to continue to use your alternates as you wish, just keep in mind that if your list is chosen, those alternates (following the rules above of course) also have a chance of appearing on the front page.
