In this Storque article, jared announces another Etsy server upgrade, this time for the Treasury, Chat and Virtual Labs.
Good news! The Treasury, Chat Rooms, and Virtual Labs are getting a significant server upgrade. The change is being made to address a number of key performance issues caused by record high usage. If the old server was a Honda Insight, the new server is a Tesla Roadster. Yes, it’s quite fast.
In order to make the change, we are temporarily suspending the creation of new Treasury lists. This will allow all the current lists to naturally expire in about three days. After all lists have expired, the server change will take place. The change itself will only take a few moments. If all is successful, the creation of new Treasury lists will once again be enabled, and we can all enjoy the performance boost.
With the current expiration schedule, the server change is looking like it will take place early Sunday morning, August 3rd. The exact time may change.
The Chat Rooms and Virtual Labs will also be moved to the new server at the same time as the Treasury. Both applications will experience about 60 seconds of downtime. All user created Chat Rooms will need to be recreated.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!

In this thread:
jared says:
We’re increasing the number of Treasury lists available to 333. This means more lists for more people.
This change is effective immediately. Enjoy!

With the successful update and transfer of the regular Treasury, we no longer have a testing need for the Treasury West.
Today I have disabled the creation of new lists in the Treasury West. The existing lists will be allowed to expire naturally. When all lists are expired, the Treasury list will be removed from the site.
Thanks to everyone who helped in these important tests.

Okay now for the real test. Read about it here:
jared says:
Come help load test the Treasury West!
http://www.etsy.com/treasury_west.php
The Treasury West is a special test configuration of the standard Treasury running on it’s own server. We’ve taken some of what we’ve learned from the recent tests and incorporated them into this version.
Some changes to the rules are as follows:
* 100 maximum lists
* 2 lists per user
* 24 expiration age
The Treasury West is for testing only. It will not be linked to the front page although you’re free to share the links to your lists in the forums or elsewhere.
This test may change or end at any time.
We appreciate your help!
(yes this is the second time I’ve made this announcement. the first time we had some extraordinary problems which should now be fixed)

Please stop so we can fix it!
Locking so we can bury this hopefully. Thanks! I post with an update as soon as I have one.

In this thread Jared posted about the success of the Treasury Explosion Party:
We did it! The Treasury explosion party was a brilliant success.
At approximately 12:08am EST, the Treasury crashed with 57 people simultaneously logged on and waiting for the last list to expire (thus opening a new Treasury spot).
This is exactly what we wanted; to view a Treasury crash in semi-controlled conditions.
Now we will retire to our dark examination rooms to pour over the nearly 20 gigs of log files and reports. For those of you a little more visually inclined, here’s a nice graphic of the event:

The fix won’t be immediate, but with this new information we’re more prepared to find and fix it. Thanks everyone for your patience and assistance in the greatest Treasury explosion party in Etsy history!

Jared updated the start time for the party in this thread:
Sorry, moving some HUGENORMOUS files around. I’ve taken the Treasury completely down while doing this.
When it comes back up, that last list should expire around 12:07 EST and the list grab will begin.
Who’s dancing!?
Original Post
Please help crash the Treasury tonight. Yes you heard it right! Read on for details.

Tonight we’re having a Treasury explosion party!
Where else but the Treasury:

Many of you are aware of the ongoing ‘disconnect’ problems plaguing the Treasury during high traffic list grabs.
What is a high traffic list grab? A normal list grab is when enough lists in the Treasury expire so that the total number of lists drops below 222. At this time, anyone waiting for a Treasury list should in theory be able to create one. A high traffic list grab is when there are 500+ people waiting at the same time.
For reasons undiscovered, some are mysteriously disconnected just before being able to create their list. For others it works fine. In extreme cases the entire Treasury stops accepting new connections and requires rebooting.
Tonight around 9pm EST, a list is going to come up for grabs. Please come help crash the Treasury tonight (Monday)!
We’re going to watch closely with a some custom monitoring tools. This announcement is to help increase the number of people trying to get a list to an explosive level. Watching an explosion will help us understand how to fix it.

The party is actually at 11pm EST. See this thread.

The chat and Treasury has been rebooted twice today.
jared says:
The Chat and Treasury server was rebooted a few moments ago for performance reasons.
Everything should be back to normal in 60 seconds or less.
Thanks for your understanding!

jared says:
Sorry friends, I just rebooted the server again (4:10pm EST). This time without warning!
It should be back up in a matter of minutes. It’s a bit painful to see that ‘disconnect’ but we’ve made some important configuration changes for the win!

jared says:
The server the Treasury and the Chat run on was rebooted this evening for performance reasons.
It appears that the people with faster connections are more likely to grab a list during these times when the server starts to lag. We are working on a system to make it more predictable when grabbing lists.
Thank you for your patience!
