Back to School Fashion Showcase: On Sale Thursday, August 7, 2008
Etsy are looking to feature back to school fashion items in their newest showcase, such as dresses, shirts, skirts, pants — or that special first day of school outfit. Think clothing staples for all ages.
In order to keep the Showcase on point thematically, the tool will only pull in items placed in the Clothing Category (i.e. top-level tag being “clothing”).
* The Back to School Fashion Front Page Showcase goes on sale Thursday, August 7th at 3:00 pm EDT.
* Go to the Showcase Gateway to purchase a spot.
* Said showcase goes live on Tuesday, August 12 at 12 am (midnight) EDT and will run until 11:59 PM EDT on August 25.
* For $15 USD, Etsy sellers can purchase a 24 hour spot in the The Back to School Fashion Showcase, which will be linked from a prominent banner on Etsy’s homepage.
* Sellers determine which item will be featured in your Showcase slot. Sellers must use the tool in Your Shop. Read more about this process here.

Also, Etsy has unveiled their Back To School gift guide today, which features a wider variety of items including dorm room decor, books & paper goods, book bags and pencil cases, etc.

If you’ve perused the Etsy Gift Guides lately, you might’ve noticed some changes. Some new guides have been added and old guides have been cleaned out and refilled. Keep an eye out for forum threads asking for suggestions, like this one for the new “Her” Gift Guide (thread now closed).
Want to know if you’re in the Gift Guides? Go to Google and type in:
USERNAME site:http://www.etsy.com/gift-guides/
replacing “USERNAME” with your own Etsy username, with no spaces. (i.e. if your name is The Craft Store, use thecraftstore in your google search). Keep in mind that it may take Google some time to find and index the new pages.

Admin responded swiftly today to user concerns about the number of times items from EtsyLabs appeared in the Gift Guides.
matt says:
Hello Friends,
We discussed this, and we think you are right. The items are now removed. Thanks for the feedback.
Love, Matt
Prior to the decision to remove the items, EtsyLabs had 14 items throughout the various guides.
What is EtsyLabs? Admin Mary explains:
EtsyLabs says:
Hey there!
Thanks so much for your question and concern. The purpose of the Etsy Labs shop is to supply buyers with promotional Etsy merchandise that would like to help us spread the good Etsy word in style. Almost every design we sell in the shop has the Etsy brand name on it. We also use it as a space to purchase classes that are taught in our community workspace housed in the Etsy offices.
All the money made from the Labs shop sales goes to offset the cost of promotional goods for events and street teams.
Update!
Apparently admin’s items will also be removed from the Gift Guides.
matt says:
We are also working to remove the admins from there too. It takes a minute, because there are so darn many of us.

Hey guys!
The guides are updated freqently with new items and the best way to check out the new items is to scroll through the first couple pages since new items are added to the front pages.
Ok and to clear up a couple rumors:
* Once an item sells from the guide, it is not automatically replaced with the same item or another item from the same shop.
* There is not a wait list or “slots” for items in the guides.
* Yes, if you have multiple items of the SAME item in stock, it will stay in the guide once it has sold and is perfectly fine; however if you realize you are in a guide and then systematically up the number of that item with the intention to change the item to something else in your shop once the first one sells (or at all really), this borders on the line of abusive behaviour since the item chosen would no longer be an item curated by Etsy administrators.

marymary also mentioned that if you have multiples of your item that is chosen for the Gift Guide, it is okay to up the quantity.

I just noticed the categories for the gift guides have changed, this must have happened today. Here is the old version of the gift guides, cached Nov 26.
anyway, “Eco Friends” has changed to “Environmentally Friendly“
“Co-workers” and “boss” have been merged into “Office Mates“
Baby girls and Baby boys has been merged to “Babies“
“Pets” has been changed to “Pets and Pet Lovers“
“Pen Pal” has been changed to “Book Worms and Writers“
and, sadly, the “Bunny Lovers” category has been removed completely. Is there anyone who doesn’t love The Bunny? Seriously. What evil Bunny haters could be responsible for this?
Alas poor Bunny, I knew her, Horatio.

RevolvingDork says:
After spotty uptime throughout its maiden voyage, the Gift Guides have been taken down temporarily for maintenance. Our team will be working hard on getting the code ready for the tens of thousands of folks out there who want to check them out. We’ll get them back online as soon as possible — when we do, we’ll let you know in the Storque!

You may have noticed that the familiar Alchemy link has been replaced in the top nav menu bar on all Etsy pages with a brand-spankin’ new feature: Etsy Gift Guides. From Vanessa’s TechUpdate article:
We are happy to announce a new site feature on Etsy, just in time for holiday shopping: Etsy Gift Guides. These guides are organized by:
- Who are you buying a gift for?
- What’s the occasion?
- How much do you want to spend?
- and Other themes
Shoppers have been asking us for more curated content and since the admin are always sending each other links to items all day long, the admin figured we would put this to good use. You can email Gift Guides to your friends and family and you can also make Etsy Minis from the Gift Guides (what’s an Etsy Mini? Click here).
Etsy assures us that Alchemy has not been dropped from the engineering to-do list (though there is no ETA for its return):
. . . you probably noticed that Gift Guides replace the Alchemy button on the top navigation. Never fear, Alchemy has not been abandoned! We’re just re-tooling a little for the busy holiday shopping season, making it easier for buyers to find the items they’re looking for. If successful, the Gift Guides will become a permanent feature here on Etsy. Please let us know if you have ideas for other themes or categories.
