Issue with timing of listings and search / cateogory results

In this thread, RD says:

It’s been brought to our attention that new listings are appearing in their categories sporadically.

This is being caused by an issue with one of our search databases, which is having problems receiving new listing information. Because the site cycles between several search databases, the results you see may sometimes be up to date, or may sometimes be late.

We’re working on rectifying this issue now, and we’ll post more when it’s all cleared up.

Sorry for the inconvenience and confusion!

Renew/Relist Bug - Update

Etsy admins and engineers have known, for at least a month, that there is a bug, or programming oversight, which allows Etsy to take a .20 listing fee without delivering the 4 months of contracted listing time.

This bug affects those listings which are in inactive or edit mode and are beyond their expected expiration date. Unlike active listings, these items are bypassed by the ‘expiry bot’ and when reactivated and renewed/relisted, it causes the listing time to be calculated from the original expiration date, not the current relisting date - which in turn actually subtracts listing time, rather than adding it. In some cases, the entire 4 month listing time has vanished, requiring an additional .20 renewal/relisting.

There have been several threads (here, here, and here) detailing this bug, each of which has been closed to further comment and discussion. The latest thread to get the invisible lock was shut down with this comment by admin stellaloella:

stellaloella says:

Please contact support [!at] etsy.com if you’ve had this specific issue.

As Chris (RevolvingDork) mentioned earlier in this thread, this occurs if you renew any item before it’s been processed by the expiration script. Currently that doesn’t happen for items in Edit Mode (inactive).

Once you re-activate a listing, you’ll need to let it expire “naturally” (usually within 24 hours if it’s past its listing term). Then you can renew it from your Expired Listings page without any loss of fees or time.

The Engineers are aware of this concern; it’s on their list of thing to improve.

Renewed item didn’t get 4 months

SupernovaDesigns came across an issue while trying to renew an item that has been sitting in edit mode that is past its expiration date. She explains in this thread:

Example: (a real life example!)
I have an item I put it in edit on, say, 10/28. It expired on 11/11. I reactivate it on 11/27. The item had not been removed from my shop, and was in active listings. I “renew” the item, and the new expiration date is 3/11 (4 months from the original expiration date), instead of 3/27 (4 months from when I renewed it).

Here is RevolvingDork’s solution to the problem:

If you have a listing that is past its expiration date, but you haven’t allowed it to expire naturally, it will be given 4 months from its last known expiration date. If you want to prevent this, you should let your listings expire naturally before renewing them.

IMO, this is a bug. A seller should not have to worry about whether their listings expire “naturally”. The listing should be given 4 months from when it was renewed. Feel free to discuss in this thread.

 UPDATE by GreenMamba.

RevolvingDork says:
If something is in edit mode and is past its expiration date, it will be moved to your expired listings within 24 hours after you activate it.

There are not currently any plans to alter the way the site works in this area. (emphasis added by GM)

AOL blocks all email from Etsy

If you use AOL for your email, you will not receive any emails from Etsy. RD explains in this thread:

Yesterday, Etsy Support received a number of inquiries from users with AOL email addresses that they were unable to register because they never received a confirmation email.

Upon closer investigation, we discovered that all outgoing Etsy email is being blocked by AOL. If you have an AOL email address, you will not be able to receive any email from Etsy. This includes transaction receipts, conversation notices, and other confirmation emails. You may also be unable to get messages from our support team.

If you have the capability, we suggest using an alternate email address while we work this issue out with AOL. ( Gmail is a good, free alternative. )

Our past experiences with email providers have shown that rectifying these issues can be a long and drawn-out process of back and forth communication. We’ll try to clear things up with AOL as soon as possible, but it may take a number of days before things are back to normal.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Image uploading issue discovered, fixed

According to RD in this thread, the problem with images has been fixed:

Yesterday we received some scattered reports of people having problems with both uploading images and getting random disconnection errors when loading images and pages normally.

These two issues seem to have been unrelated. The uploading issue was caused by a problem on one of our image servers, which is why it was very intermittent. The issue has since been resolved, so uploading new images and relisting sold listings should work correctly.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. We are further investigating the accompanying network issues, and will post more updates as we learn more.

Are images on Etsy not loading for you?

Many users are experiencing Red X syndrome on Etsy, images are not loading. Etsy needs your help to troubleshoot the problem. Please post in this topic on Etsy if you are having this problem:

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

There have been a few scattered reports of people having issues loading pages and / or images. Internally, everything seems to be running smoothly, and none of our engineers have been able to reproduce the issues that some of reported.

This points to some kind of routing issue — some section of the architecture between Etsy and your computer that isn’t working properly.

You can help us track this down by supplying us with some information:

1. What issue exactly are you seeing? Does it persist after refreshing the page? Does it persist after restarting your computer?

2. Where are you located?

3. (Advanced users) Can you paste a tracert from your machine to www.etsy.com ?

If we find anything, we’ll make an announcement and will take care of it. Thanks!

Treasury rebooted today

jared says:
The Treasury has been rebooted to help recover from some insanely high traffic this morning.

All should be running smoothly in about 5 minutes.

Apologies to everyone who was waiting patiently for a list then got booted just moments before the open spot became available. It was the surge of people trying to grab a list all at the same time. I’m still working on a system to help mitigate the demand, and we are getting closer (22 successful open spot grabs in a row until today).

Suggestions for those having problems loading images

This is an update from the previous thread that was started early September.

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

There are a few threads about difficulty uploading images, so here’s a guide to troubleshooting this issue.

**A BIG NOTE FOR EVERYONE: If your images do not meet these specifications they will most likely NOT work. Even if you successfully did things differently in the past, that is no guarantee that it will work now. We’ve always suggested that you adhere to these guidelines for your images.**

1. Do *not* upload untouched files pulled directly from your digital camera. First re-save them using image editing software, such as Photoshop or Paint.

Reason: Many cameras save their images in non-standard jpeg formats that don’t work with Internet applications. If you save them for the web using image editing software, they’ll be put in standard jpeg format.

2. Ensure that your image filesize is 500kb or less. If it is larger than 500kb, resize the image or save it using a lower quality setting. Remember, 1mb = 1024kb. If your image filesize is being measured in mb, it’s too big!

Reason: As a security and bandwidth precaution, our image forms are written to throttle uploaded files to 2mb. There is also a timeout built into the servers themselves that will stop taking upload data if it takes over a certain number of minutes to be sent. Since bandwidth upstream speeds vary, we recommended that broadband users keep their images under 500kb and dialup users keep their images under 250kb.

3. Make sure you’re saving your image in RGB format, and not CMYK.

Reason: Simply put, CMYK files will not work on the web.

4. Check your firewall settings. Many users are behind firewalls without even knowing it. You may have a firewall built into your operating system, or as a piece of software running on your computer, or built into your router or modem. Since changing the settings for firewalls varies wildly from one setup to the next, you’ll have to consult the firewall provider’s documentation for instructions.

Reason: Firewalls are sometimes set to throttle upstream traffic by default. This is basically the equivalent of your system blocking your own traffic to the internet.

Hope that helps!

Bill Issue: due amount is lower than total due

RevolvingDork says:
Hi all,

We’ve gotten reports that some folks’ “Due By” balances are not dropping after they make payments towards their Etsy seller’s bill. It looks like the “Total Balance” is going down accordingly, but the “Due By” balances are remaining.

We’re looking into this issue now, and hope to have a resolution shortly. Don’t worry — any payments you make are still being recorded and tallied up properly — there’s just a calculation issue with the amount displayed in the “Due By” section. If you see the payment in your recent activity / statement, we’ve got it.

We’ll post again once the issue has been resolved. Sorry for the confusion!

Edit

RevolvingDork says:

Hey guys,

We’ve fixed the display issue for “Due By” amounts in your bills. Now all of your number should have recent payments factored in properly.

Let us know if you have any more issues!

Noticed the Treasury lists keep going up? Here’s why…

EtsyLabs says:
Hey guys! No bug this time I’m happy to report. I’ve been making treasuries in honor of the Crafty Bastards craft show going on this Sunday. All the picks were chesen specifically from the event’s directors and put into the treasuries by me. Read more here:

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/craftybastards/

and here:
http://www.etsy.com/storque/section/events/article/find-etsy-at-crafty-bastards/273/

As part of our relationship with this particular event, the event directors of Crafty Bastards will be curating the homepage today and tomorrow (hence the curator name).

If you are in the DC area, definitely come by and say hello at our booth/tutorial area.

So sorry if this has created confusion for anyone and hope you enjoy their curated picks!

xoxoxo,

Mary
