Input requested on public vs. private views

In this thread, Marymary asks sellers to vote on whether they would prefer view counts to remain public, or to become private.

marymary says:
Hey guys!

We have seen several community requests for view counts to be made private for shop owner’s eyes only and would like to research this request a little further.

In the thread below, please state YES or NO, followed by your reason (if you have one) for making views private to shop owner’s eyes only!

Something to think about (but you don’t need to post about):

* How do you use your own views?
* Have you ever looked at the views of other’s shops and for what reasons?

Thanks so much for all of your feedback,

Mary

What, exactly, is the friggin’ point? It’s not like they’re accurate or ever will be again…

*oh wait, I can’t post in the forum*
*yeah, that’s a really fair way to conduct community input*
    *rolleyes*

I hope they don’t change it… it would screw up the counter on majaba, and I doubt if Etsy would provide anything with similar functionality.

I really don’t care if my own shop views are private or public, and I never pay attention to them anyway. If we had shop stats to know where the views are coming from, then I’d care more. In general I think it’s more important to make the views accurate and make sure they are saved to disk periodically instead of saving them in RAM, that issue is more important than whether they are private or public.

I want them gone……but I want Seller Stats more.

I just have not heard any valid reason to keep the view count public. I mean, if they keep them public, it’s not something I would petition (like USD) but it just doesn’t make any sense to me.

I can’t understand why it is taking so long to supply us with even basic stats and then build on that.

I’d be fine with them being private too, I really have no strong opinion on this issue because I rarely look at views in my own shop and NEVER look at them in other people’s shops. I wouldn’t even notice if they became private tomorrow! If there are people with strong feelings wanting them private, I will support them because I don’t have strong feelings either way so I’d always go on the side of privacy rights if there’s no strong argument against it.

Until views are stable, this seems like a premature question. There was a promise that views would no longer be held on a temporary server, but views continue to “disappear” as of 5/11/08, so why discuss a section of the site that may crash at any time?
I certainly appreciate the arguments that views should be private, but I would just prefer them to be reliable. Since Etsy does not provide ANY other statitics, and probably will not provide any for a very long time, views are the only measurement - and that’s not saying much. After 3 years, sellers should have access to the usual measurements employed on most other major retail sites.
