The Storque has announced the next Town Hall meeting with Etsy founder Rokali, at 4:00pm EST on Friday, April 11th in the Treehouse room of the Virtual Labs.
A couple caveats:
The room will fill up quickly. We’re working on a Balcony feature, which will increase the capacity greatly. Till then, it’s first come, first served.
Since there’s no single time that everyone in our global community can attend, so each meeting will be recorded and posted in the Storque for your re-viewing pleasure.
editorial- the article says EST (eastern standard time) but I am guessing they actually mean EDT, since New York does observe Daylight Savings time and it is in effect right now. This is important when figuring the time differential from GMT.
Time conversion:
4 PM, EDT Eastern USA
3 PM, CDT Central USA
2 PM, MDT Mountain USA
1 PM, PDT Pacific USA
8 PM GMT/UTC
9 PM United Kingdom (UK is now on Summer / Daylight Saving Time (NOT GMT))
10 PM Central Europe time zone, (+2 GMT), in countries which are currently observing Summer / Daylight Saving Time (which I think is most of them). This covers France, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, etc.

I didn’t know about EDT…everything is always given in EST lol I bet Etsy didn’t even know there’s a difference…but yeah, going forward WOULD make the east coast -4 GMT as opposed to -5 which is a difference for everywhere else in the world when using the conversion suggested by Etsy i.e. GMT differences

Most people don’t realize what the letters EST actually stands for; the S means “standard time”. We are not on standard time for half the year but people just say “EST” out of habit..
For USA members it wouldn’t make much difference because all states start daylight savings time on the same date, so for example for me in California, I am always 3 hours behind New York in the summer or winter. I just subtract 3 and get my local time and that’s that. Easy peasy.
But for international users, it’s hard enough trying to calculate the differential in standard time, normally what they do is first convert the US time to GMT and then convert to their local time. Right now you have the additional issue of daylight savings so then the difference between EDT and EST is quite important. (most of Europe also observes daylight savings but they start it later in the year than the USA so they may not know when the US has switched to daylight savings time, which makes it even more important to give the correct UTC offset)
I just didn’t want all the International members showing up an hour late and not being able to get a seat. It seems like international Etsy members already get the shaft so much of the time. (not being allowed to enter contests and whatnot)

i guess this townhall is taking the place of the long awaited and promised second ironing board podcast??
whatever happened to that one?

I hope they plan to transcribe (or record) anything spoken this time. The chats with Matt about shop closings were rendered useless, and I didn’t learn much from reading the transcript other than people had many good questions.

Matt isn’t using audio anymore for his more recent Chatt with Matts, so I think they learned their lesson from that. It has pluses and minuses. For the people IN the chat it’s a plus because Matt comes across very well in audio and video. For the people not in the chat, it’s a minus because they miss most of the substance in the written transcript.
But Rokali does not come across well in audio and video, he’s fidgety and weak, so I think for him it might be better to stick to written communication. There’s really no plus side to him using audio and video like there was with Matt.

I agree JB, it was definitely something that needed to be pointed out for international users…thanks for doing so :) (and taught me something too!)

Oh good, Matt has edited the Storque article and given the GMT offset.
The new article title
Thank you Matt!
I know it’s all confusing and annoying to bring math into it ( it seems like lots of arty types just loathe math!) but I really want for all Etsy members around the globe to have the same chance to speak their concerns. Although I haven’t figured out the Australian time, it will probably be in the middle of the night or some very inconvenient time. Darn this round world we live on!

To underline that Etsy continues to make life difficult for sellers - it took me over 15 minutes to find information about the Town meeting, since it was buried amongst a lot of other unrelated articles in Storque.
Etsy constantly makes its sellers waste time and effort trying to find info that might directly impact on their stores and sales.
The articles, when they do appear, are written in such a vague manner, peppered with a lot of unnecessary “cute” comments (in an effort to appear informal and friendly, I suppose) that they impart little real info.
I am tired of wasting 50% of my time on Etsy trying to find out how things work, why the rules keep changing every month, and why I don’t have any new opportunities on the site to promote my store————-nothing new at all in the last 18 months. The site is stagnant and boring.
