Today, March 30, many users have noticed gaps in their “threads you have posted in” section.
All previously locked threads on the Etsy forums have been deleted. This probably happened last night during the forum maintenance downtime.
This includes threads locked for length which did not break any rules, and threads which contained important admin announcements. All the old constitution discussions from last year, etc.
All are now brick walls.
some forum threads discussing the deletions, which may themselves be deleted soon

UPDATE 6:15 PM, EDT
The locked threads have been restored.
Locked threads are back but are no longer searchable. If you have the direct url you can read it but they will not appear in forum search.

“Frankly I never could understand whey Etsy uses a forum set up with such limited functionality in the first place.”
Etsy does everything from scratch. PERIOD.
*sigh*

“I would urge anyone who feels that this “hinders the community” to please voice your opinion in that thread. If Admin hears nothing, they will assume that everyone is fine with it.”
And emails to community@etsy.com are great too. That’s where feedback is supposed to go, as I understood it.

“Many important admin policy statements are inside locked threads.”
Like the Constitution threads!! Where separation of vintage and commercial supplies was originally discussed and promised (whether one agrees with that or not). And where Rob had a lot to say about his vision for the site.

Oh Etsy, Etsy. Just when things start getting better, you get sillier.
Does Etsy admin really expect anyone to buy that line about the locked threads using up agreat deal of server resources? It’s transparently NOT why they’ve done this.

OMG that is the biggest FIB of all time!
locked threads are not that many, why don’t they just delete all promo threads more than 6 months old, that will be 100x as much server space than all the locked threads from the past 2 years.
Many important admin policy statements are inside locked threads. People need to be able to find those or they will just re-ask the same questions over and over.
I cannot believe they are saying they did this to save resources, that’s an utter lie because it does NOT save hardly any resources. They did it to save their reputations and hide from accountability on their past statements. Otherwise, why haven’t they announced this change in the Storque? If they were really doing it to save resources, why was it done all sneaky and without any announcement?
Do they think we were born yesterday?

“RevolvingDork says:
The locked threads have been removed from the search indexes for now. This will help us scale the forums so they can continue to grow with the community — keeping all of the locked threads in the search indexes used up a great deal of server resources.
We’ll continue to listen to user concerns and we’ll gauge if this helps or hinders the community.”
I would urge anyone who feels that this “hinders the community” to please voice your opinion in that thread. If Admin hears nothing, they will assume that everyone is fine with it.

I recommend saving it as a webpage (HTML document) rather than screenshot.
Saved webpages are more versatile, you can copy/paste text from them, the links are clickable, etc.
The Ministry of Truth can’t sanitize your hard drive. (yet)
