Christmas Morning Downtime

In this forum thread, RevolvingDork writes:

We’ll be taking the site down very early on Christmas day to perform an upgrade of the Master Database. This upgrade will help us facilitate future growth and make it easier for us to develop new features.

The estimated downtime will be:

Dec 25th
1:00am - 6:00am

Not living in NY, NY? Here’s a handy time zone converting tool: World Time Server. Just choose your location out of the second box.

You know, I was so surprised to find this announcement and really think it’s long overdue. Most sites I’ve ever used had scheduled maintenance, usually weekly.

Gotta say, having foreknowledge of the downtime is a big plus and I’m glad there was a warning but I think it should have been emailed in addition to posting in the forums.

I also think it’s great that they actually picked a time that not too many people are likely to be shopping!

Well, that must have gone well. We didn’t hear anything. maybe they didn’t even do it? I guess the site was down from 4-8 or so.

The 25 pages of people thanking Haim for doing his job was a bit unnecessary, in my opinion.

I’m pretty sure that if most anyone was the co-founder and head engineer of a business like Etsy, they would find time to work on holidays. It’s quite common in the tech field to work in the middle of the night and on holidays, since that when traffic is lowest and service interruption is the least problematic.

True, Hazel, but then again, there’s so little to celebrate that I think we grasp at straws, you know?

I’ve noticed that on Etsy. It;s similar to features of abusive relationships…

after waiting all year for meaningful updates, and the admins acting sort of touchy in various situations… when they do something extremely trivial to do, like add a button to view your shop, and put the price on step 5 of listings, like it should have been anyway, people react like Etsy has done them personally a Major Altruistic Favor, and find the need to praise them in the forums. Something like “Holy cow! I’m so happy you are actually doing your job! Congratulations!” seems appropriate to me, but many feel otherwise.
