In this thread, RD says:
We’ve taken the color picker down for some emergency maintenance. Due to record levels of traffic hitting the site, the load from a specific color picker function has been causing some parts of the site to behave sluggishly. We’ll be looking at ways to enhance the color picker this week, and will have it back online as soon as we can. As always, site performance is a top priority, so we’re doing what we can to keep it running optimally.
Update
In this thread, RD welcomed the Color Picker back:
It’s back and radder than ever.
Also, it was updated last week so that only active listings come up in the results. Check it out!

I find the color picker to be one of the more unnecessary toys.

Agreed. It rarely worked for me on the occasions I’ve used it, or brought up incorrect matches or sold (?!) items.

I made the same comment in the original thread & RD replied that it’s actually one of the more popular features. I couldn’t resist pointing out that popular doesn’t equal useful. I just wish they’d get their priorities straight is all.

It’s fun to look at, but doesn’t really work like it is supposed to. Yet another way to browse at random.

The thread is closed, ostensibly because the feature is back online.

i’d like to see proof that it is a popular way of BUYING, not just searching but BUYING. cuz i’ve never seen it bring anything up that was appropriate. my daughter wanted to use it to purchase a gift for a friend who really liked pink (i think) and all it pulled up was pink backgrounds and such. it was not helpful in anyway.

oh, and how much of its popularity is due to it being the first in the list of ways to shop?
