In order to clarify Etsy’s policy concerning the use of language and images on the site, Etsy has updated the wording of the  DOs & DON’Ts slightly. (Please note that these are not policy changes; these are the same policies that were implemented at the time the DOs & DON’Ts were launched Spring 2007.)

People on Etsy come from many different walks of life; we’re an international, multi-cultural marketplace. These policies are about keeping this community healthy – and growing. Reaching a diverse audience is essential to the success of our marketplace.

New under Member Accounts:

  • Don’t use profane or racist language in your username and/or public profile.

New under Selling

  • Don’t use profane or racist language or images in the public areas of your Etsy Shop, such as: username, public profile, item title, first image of a listing, tag, avatar, banner, announcement, and/or shop section.

The rules for listing Mature Content items have not changed.

Please brush up on these policies and make sure your shop is up to date.

Phew, I thought profanity in item listings was taboo. Thanks to whomever corrected me. I’m all for this change then. I can recall the many heated threads on this topic from back in the days I used to visit the forums… good times.

I have no problem with the title and first image being restricted. That is a generally positive change although I hope enough time will be given for sellers to edit their existing listings. I really hope Etsy reconsiders the tags rule. You never see tags unless you are searching for them.

    Agreed.

I keep trying to bump the announcement thread I created in the fora, but it keeps disappearing under a mountain of CraftyBiz. Sellers of mature items don’t realize the rules have, indeed, changed - and Etsy has not made a decent effort to notify them (unless they have e-mailed/convoed each and every one, which I seriously doubt). That’s just wrong.

all they have to do is add a profanity filter to the username registration process…most sites have it, Etsy doesn’t. It seems backwards to allow a name to be created like “fucker” (RIP fucker, whoever you were) when you explicitly say it’s against the rules.

I agree that it should be allowed in tags and descriptions so that people searching for the items can find them

I saw a new username the other day that made me say “wha??” lol it was stankass or something like that…maybe there’s been some issues lately with new signups choosing inappropriate names

or maybe they’re trying to censor the use of the word asshat ;)
