Policy Change: Links in Email from Etsy

From the Storque:

A very smart man I like to call George Bernard Shaw once said, “The golden rule is that there are no golden rules.”

With that in mind, I am pleased to announce that we will be altering two of our rules for the general benefit of Etsy. Effective immediately, the admin reserve the right to include links and attachments in the emails we send out. We will soon be beginning a number of opt-in emails that will help drive sales and keep users informed. Including links back to Etsy will be essential in making these emails effective, and do not, we have ascertained, pose an increased security risk. Furthermore, we are exploring ways to improve the registration process, and have decided that link-based confirmation may be required. As before, no email from Etsy will ever ask for your password or credit card information. Thanks.

I guess I never realized that no etsy emails were supposed to contain links.
I’ve received Etsy emails before that had links…but they were individual emails not automated ones.

So ,someone smarter than me about these things explain why this needed it’s own Storque post. I don’t understand what this means.

Hmm, now that you point that out, Rita….
The embroidery lady, ‘joined’ in 2005 and has 0 feedback.
They have an article about her because …. ??? Because she embroiders with celebrities? Doesn’t seem like much of an Etsy role model. Something like ‘Hey, don’t use Etsy at all! We’ll write an article about you.”.

my warning email contained a link back to the forum in which i allegedly infracted, so including links is nothing new

they don’t even have stuff listed amanda…that’s totally what i would push…someone who does nothing but sell off-site. i’m guessing they opened the etsy shop to stop someone else from using the name.

Hm, there’s lots of other things in the Storque that I think are less Etsy-related than Jenny Hart. There are a number of sellers on Etsy who are licensed/authorized to sell her designs and products, as well as items made with her designs. She’s very small-shop-friendly.

I find the Storque confusing. Some of the sections don’t make sense to me.

I think I got an email with a link to a thread in it once. Way back when I actually used to get the occasional personal response.

The emails with links (like warning emails or replies to help queries) I think were only individual manually sent emails. I think they mean their policy was that the automated mass emails never contained links. Those mass emails are the ones most often caught in spam filters so I think their reasoning was that lack of links would prevent it from being spam-filtered.

We all know Etsy has their own golden rule… of course!
    “Be nice. You’re golden.”
