Earlier this week, several Etsy members were banned permanently, some without ever having been muted, and some without ever having been sent a warning.
This is a major change from the guidelines originally posted by Stella, reported by us here:

This is a very long thread. If you wish to read the statements by the 5 banned people but don’t have time to read the entire thread, here are the numbers of their posts.

Everyone, thanks for your thoughts.
The editors are closing this thread for the weekend so we can take a break and attend to our real lives.
Hope you’ll enjoy the hiatus as well.

Yes, your own .com URL can be forwarded to ANY place you sell so that YOU control where your customers land. If you leave one selling site you don’t lose your customers.
Anyone who uses an etsy type URL loses their customers if they leave etsy - or any other selling site for that matter.
If your customers identify you with your own .com URL and if you stop selling on etsy (or any other site) and open your own site they automatically go to your new place when they type the URL on your card.
An etsy type URL is a TRAP. I learned that the hard way.
Godaddy has search engine friendly forwarding (301 is best) available at no extra charge, plus free/inexpensive email accounts.
