Previously, if you chose to keep your favorites private, the heart would show up as labeled “anonymous.”. Jared has changed it to say “secret admirer.”
Might not be accurate, but certainly less scary to those new to Etsy.

It’s kind of cute, but it’s also adding to the fairly irrational emotions that so many people seem to develop over their hearts, which I’m not a big fan of myself.

Exactly, Simone.
If I were a seller, I would use hearts to keep track of my competition. Hardly a “secret admirer.”
More etsy language that glosses over reality.

Oooh, could you imagine the hair-pulling and rending of clothes if it was “competitor” rather than “secret admirer”? Heh heh heh.

how about just good old “stalker” or peeping tom?
or maybe you could choose on your profile how you want to be known anonymously?

re: cute…
It’s been my observation that while some sellers may want an adult, professional selling environment Etsy has actually been moving more in the direction of a social networking site (one that happens to sell things). A place to pal around with your girls and gab. A lot of the language and policies seem to lean in that direction. In other words, the focus is not really a solid platform for the sellers. The focus is on socializing for the buyers. Which is why the language is cutesy — “kiss and make up”, “secret admirer” — and why many sellers feel frustrated. This may end up being a worthwhile approach to bring the social element of in-person shopping online, but it does mean that as a seller you are a secondary consideration (no views, no stats, no reporting, no batch image uploads, no scheduled posting, no policy page, no live links, categories are unresolved, search feature is poor, administrative announcements are difficult to find, administrative policies are foggy and inconsistent).
re: stalker…
that would be funny if it weren’t for the number of people who actually were stalked and/or harrassed on Etsy. :(
re: use of hearts…
many people use hearts to keep track of things they actually like, not just competitors. Otherwise it would be better to just bookmark their competitors. Unless you go anonymous (few do) marking your competitor means they’re also aware of you. A tricky game.

i think dyno nailed it with the ’social networking’ comment

I heart anonymously because, frankly, I don’t think it’s anyone’s business who and why I’ve hearted. Maybe Etsy can change it so my hearts say “nunya!”
