Etsy’s hiring troubles are discussed in a Workforce Management article, Firms Hit Wall on Tech Worker Hiring in New York City.
Amanda Fung of Crain’s New York Business writes:
Brooklyn-based Etsy, an e-commerce site for homemade arts and crafts, is in dire need of software engineers as it continues to grow. With more than 250,000 registered users, 500,000 items listed on its Web site and more than $1 million in annual sales, it relies on engineers to maintain and increase its volume of business. So a few months ago, the two-year-old firm opened a San Francisco office, where it now has four engineers.
“There are more applicants out there,” says Etsy founder Rob Kalin, who expects to hire five more engineers by the end of the year. “More people come out with computer science degrees and want to work for startups.”
UEN’s coverage of Etsy’s efforts to hire new engineers can be found here and here.

Maybe the lack of “Corporate Feel” is scaring potential employee’s away. I hope they find the people they need.

I thought they hired 5 more developers?
In Rob’s “Open Etsy” blog and the staff photo, it listed 5 new people who were starting soon. I wonder if this interview was done before those 5 were hired?
It’s strange they keep saying they don’t have enough staff, because etsy has a quite large staff in proportion to the size of their membership and their alexa ranking.

That’s what happens when you have to re-invent the wheel every time you plan a trip.

They took away the $1,000 reward for referring a successful applicant. Hmmm…

This must be from an older interview. I thought they hired more engineers. It’s not surprising they’d have better luck finding software engineers in the Bay Area. I’m guessing their new Engineering head is tapping some of his connections.

I’m confused… I know they opened an office in NYC last year, but the article states they also opened an office in SF? Is that true? and who is stationed there, it seems all the principals are in ny.

Jared and his team are in SF, and I guess RD divides his time between Brooklyn and Berkeley.
The Sampler team is also in San Francisco. They even talked about opening “EtsyLabs West”.
oh and welcome back Dyno!

Yeah, Team Sampler and Etsy are sharing an office in San Francisco. I don’t believe Jared is there, as he lives in New Mexico… but maybe there are engineers there.
