Etsy says no double-billing has occurred

Our new merchant provider has a strange (and bad) way of collecting money from debit cards. They send in a pre-auth and then they send in a request for funds separate from the pre-auth (not as a follow-up to it).

The first pre-auth charge will reserve funds inside your account but the funds will never actually be pulled.

This is apparently something our merchant provider is aware of planning to fix. I wish they’d have told us about it *before* we ran any charges, as the issue did not show up during our testing.

My post here keeps getting buried so I’m going to lock the thread with an update.

Nobody’s account was double-billed.

Double-billing would mean that we requested the funds twice for a given charge.

This did not happen.

Every charge on a credit or debit card is actually made up of two parts:

1. Ask if the funds are available (this is called a pre-auth, and shows up on your statement as “pending”)
2. Collect the funds as a *follow-up* request to the pre-auth

The time between the two is usually quite short, so you don’t see the Pending phase.

If a pre-auth is not followed up by a collection request, after ~7 days the pending charges disappear completely from your statement.

However, with our new merchant provider, *some* debit cards & their issuing bank, in their interaction with our gateway, did this:

1. Ask if the funds are available (the pre-auth)
2. Collect the amount *as a separate request*, leaving the pre-auth dangling there

Step #2 is what’s causing all the problems, and it’s an issue between our merchant provider and the banks. I’ve spent many hours on the phone trying to find the right solution.

I’ll post an update as soon as I have one. In the meantime please understand what’s actually happening here. This is not a double billing. This is not a double billing.

    HA HA HA!!! They just made a very hard decision much easier for me. I was having a hard time cutting the ties with Etsy because I love so much about it but I’m done, done, done!!!!! I feel sorry for all the sellers who’s items I had favorited to buy. eCRATER is great and such a professional selling community. : ) I’m also enjoying this drama free online selling forum.     Retroattic, I can’t believe it. Didn’t Stella post that the first step in the Etsy Chain of Punishment was a warning?

    I have flagged people several times before for the fee-avoidance rule and not only are their shops still there, so are the items.

    Also, aren’t there sellers on the Featured Sellers list that have nothing in their shop now but a link to an off-Etsy site?

    Un-fucking-believable.

    That’s the “community member” I’ve had my eye on for some time now. I even went so far as to research the possibility that “she” might be a forum plant.

    Did you know there are services where you can hire professional forum posters? You know the type…Happy Shiny People.

    Too bad for EMC though…I HATE the new “voice” directive she has submitted to. Makes etsy look successful in their intimidation tactics.

    Wow! I guess I’m done with Etsy! I poseted a thread late last night asking if Etsy planned to refund overdraft fees to anyone who’s bank refused to reverse them. This morning I woke up and my shop is gone and from what I can tell that thread went with it!!!! I had an email saying my shop had been closed because I had removed my items and redirected sellers to my eCRATER store. Yes, I know that is a no no but I find it quite a coincidence that it’s been that way since March and nothing is done about it until today considering I have had several communications in the past with the same admin who shut it down. She didn’t notice it before?? And, why not a request to change the announcement instead of shutting down my shop since I am also a buyer on Etsy!!!

    Rob said there would not be bullying tolerated in the forums? wow. i watch while 3 or 4 people continually bully anyone who says anything remotely negative about etsy. It’s horrible. emc got muted but BeaG isn’t? why the hell not? cuz she says things like “let’s all be polite and sing Kumbaya”?
