View sorting not working? Here’s why…

RevolvingDork says:
Many folks on the site have noticed that sorting listings by their number of views can lead to inconsistent or innacurate results.

This is due to the fact that views are only updated in the database one per day, and the database is what sorts results. During the day, the views accumulated do not factor into the sorting algorithm.

Due to the high number of views that are processed on Etsy every day, it is not currently possible to update the sorting with any more frequency.

We will most likely be removing the sort by view option from results pages, as showing innacurate data is the last thing we want to do.

“toss in there, they apparently aren’t particularly concerned about hiring experienced people. they are in RD’s opinion, apparently, boring.”

For both cultural and financial reasons, it’s difficult for start-ups to hire experience. But did you see the article in Businessweek last month? It looks like they bit the bullet and hired a senior programmer from eBay.

(see page 2 of the article)

I can’t tell if he was one of eBay’s senior programmers, though. Maybe it just means he’ll be senior at Etsy.

From the looks of the JOBS page, it seems they are placing top priority on hiring engineers at the expense of every other department. There are 7 jobs listed and I read them and it seems they are looking for highly qualified people with many years’ experience. It seems like their focus is heading in the right direction.

They say they are looking for people with experience, but I am not sure that is as high a priority to them as enthusiasm and personal connections to etsy staff. One of the new hires has a degree in programming- sounds great, right? But he was hired for a customer service job! I totally don’t get that. He would have been a great fit for one of the programming jobs but has no CS experience and no etsy experience, the two alleged qualifications for the “hall monitor” job description. As potentially sensitive and controversial as that job will be, I cannot understand why they hired a programmer for it and not someone with real CS experience.

we need people that are in the highest demand everywhere, programmers. we haven’t collected money from our customers in 6 months…not important. half the stuff doesn’t work…we’ll make excuses. I have a brother that has years of experience as a programmer…why would he work for etsy when he can work for google? that’s the problem.
