Occasionally, I’ve noticed a missing avatar or two in the fora. I’ve always assumed the user removed his/her avatar for whatever reason. Yesterday, I finally put it together - “blank avatars” seem to correspond to users being muted on the fora which meshes with my recollection of other avs that have gone blank recently. These same users’ avatars still are showing in their profiles and/or stores at the same time, just missing in the fora threads.

… however can someone supply me a link to an admission of human error on Etsy re: the ‘accidental’ mutings catalogued here?
admitting an error takes guts, admitting it so publicly takes a whole assortment of viscera

Serena, I’m completely aware that it was fixed. I was commenting that it happened at all. Human error was discussed in a topic on Etsy , and some one from this thread who was posting in that thread found it to be completely unacceptable and harmful. My point is, as we can see from this incident, that mistakes do indeed happen. Glad it was remedied so quickly here.

Sylvie, the deleted comment has been reinstated and the situation explained. Certainly that’s not indicative of censorship. Please let me know if you have any concerns about the continued operation of UEN.

Oh, the irony of this incident, deleting a negative comment, under this particular topic, muting on Etsy, that has often been compared to censorship.

I’m sorry to take to darn long to respond. Unfortunately internet time moves about 10x as fast as real life, and real life is already a lot to handle!
I hope Kate’s response clarifies what happened and what our policies are for all who had questions and concerns. Again, the way that Allisa’s comments were handled was not representative of our policies and was a one-time occurrence. Please do ask us if you have questions.
A quick few notes on our official ways of doing things:
- While we deserve the right to delete comments that are spam or abusive, we have thus far only deleted spam comments. We will soon be posting a clearer definition of “abusive.” This will take the from of a main UEN post.
- We do not change the comment text of posters or add links. Once users post comments, they should never expect any chances. We very highly value preserving comments as records of discussions, and remind everyone that this is a publicly available site.
I’m glad we all got this sorted out, and again, please let us know if you have concerns.
Best,
Sara

Kate, whatever you and the other editors decide, just post it over in etsynewswiki.
(sorry, couldn’t help the sarcasm. . . . .I am sure you will all will do what’;s right and let us know what’s up).

Farther back in this thread. I deleted a post which I believe/d (based on several pieces of circumstantial evidence) to be a flame from someone who has been disciplined for a string of abusive behavior off of UEN. UEN’s official policy is that we reserve the right to delete comments we consider abusive. We have been very conservative thus far and have reinstated the comment because out of that inter-site context, it’s not highly problematic.
I also made a mistake. I added a URL to that poster’s user fields which the poster had not included. No comment text was altered by myself or any other UEN editor. That is against our policy. When the commenter protested at mistaken identity, a co-editor immediately removed the link. I apologize for doing this. It was a poor judgement call on my part. UEN editors are currently discussing policy changes which will give us more consistency and clarity for dealing with issues as they arise.

Angelica and Karina,
It makes it even worse when you see that the two people that they just hired live in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Not that I’m unhappy for the new hires, but etsy’s gotta stop with the doublespeak.
