Can’t Acccess Etsy? Toss Your Cookies.

One of Etsy’s servers crashed this morning, causing a chain reaction resulting in some people having issues with the site. All is back on track but if you’re still having issues accessing the site, please follow RevolvingDork’s/Chris’ advice.

RevolvingDork says:
Due to the server issues descibed by Mike this morning ( http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5115541 ), some of you may be experiencing strange cookie and login issues.

If you are unable to log in or are getting an error message about your cookies, try clearing your browser’s cookies. Then, restart your computer.

If you still experience issues after doing this, let us know, and we’ll do our best to help you out!

*Don’t* delete all of your cookies is my strongest advice!!! Especially if you interact with a number of websites where you have settings and login details established - these will all be lost if you delete all cookies. To be safe you should only delete the cookies relating to Etsy.

How you do this will depend on which browser you’re using, but if you can find a way to view them and pinpoint those belonging to http://www.etsy.com and delete them, this is a much much safer way to go.

I am SO glad I didn’t do this. I know they (admin) has given this advice in the past as well.

    I would have been lost.

I didn’t even delete any of my cookies when i got that cookie error yesterday. I just closed all browser windows and reopened them and it was fine. Did not reboot.
Etsy’s cookies are session cookies so they don’t last after closing your browser anyway. (same as myspace) You do not have to reboot to get a new session you just have to close all your browser windows and then reopen them.

    instructions for Windows users

To delete specific cookies using internet explorer:
click TOOLS> then click INTERNET OPTIONS
a dialog box will pop up and it’s open to the “general” tab by default.
If you don’t want to delete all of your cookies, you can also just delete specific ones by clicking “settings” (under the temporary internet files category in the center of the general tab), then on the next grey box, click “VIEW FILES”.
A page will then pop up that lists all your cookies. You can sort the list by alphabetical order, file type, etc by clicking the column headers. This will help you find the etsy cookie. Delete every cookie that has etsy.com in the name, there might be more than one. Delete the ones that are computername@etsy.com.
the file names of cookies all start with cookie:computername@domain.com
for me that is cookie: administrator@etsy.com. So if you sort by file name and alphabetical order, all your cookies will be clumped together under C.

To delete specific cookies using Firefox:
Click TOOLS>then select OPTIONS> select PRIVACY tab > COOKIES
You can then select either “show cookies” or delete cookies
If you select “show cookies” you will see the cookies grouped in folders and you can delete only cookies that you want to delete.
Delete the ones that are in the etsy.com folder, or delete the entire etsy.com folder. A new folder will be created when you visit etsy again.
